Do you think the world is going too PC?

I’m on a book group on Facebook and they’re discussing trigger warnings in books. That’s fine, things like death, rape, murder, miscarriage, mental health etc might be triggering.

But how far do you go until you just stop people from writing books in case one person in the whole world is offended?

That's a good question! Especially if someone were to look at the questions I've been responding to the past few days. I think what disturbs me sometimes beyond just the offensive way some people respond to those topics is just the callousness some people show. I mean, just because someone can't relate or hasn't experienced those things doesn't mean they can't show some common decency when discussing those topics. All of the topics that you mentioned, in general, can be triggering but that doesn't mean we shouldn't all be able to discuss those things with sensitivity and maturity (sorry to get a bit off-topic).

Anyway, I think that also goes for writing books, sure those topics could be offensive to someone and I suppose with freedom of speech there could be writers that could write about those topics in an offensive way. I guess though I would have to wonder why they would do that? If it's an important topic showing some decency and writing about it sensitively might get more people with complex views reading about them and might open up the dialogue to where solutions could be hatched. It also seems that history has shown it's when the world closes its eyes to certain ills that really bad things happen but when the world acknowledges those ills and people work together sometimes real change happens.

Well what they call " triggered" used to only be taken seriously if it happened to people who have seen and personally endured horrific trauma. People like combat soldiers, cops, and firefighters. We could also add battered women and parents who have lost children to that list. And there's more I can't think of right now. You could call it PTSD. Seeing or hearing something reminds you of your trauma, of your grief, and triggers a reaction. That's normal for people who have been traumatized.
What isn't normal is people who have not suffered great trauma, to be triggered by absolutely everything, everyday all day, and expecting the entire culture to turn itself inside out to make you as comfortable as possible. And that includes books.

I think most people get offended when they hear something that they needed to hear, but don't want to hear it. As long as those things aren't being discussed in a malicious manner, then they should be able to be discussed freely. People should be able to avoid these discussions if they choose, but not keep others from discussing anything.

I think the world is simply becoming more aware. I'm someone who agrees with the importance of trigger warnings. I don't think they're necessary for "every" scenario but a bit of me appreciates the warning.
I think that as long as people value the importance of discussing mental health, sexual violence, and other world issues, books will continue to be written about them! Trigger warnings aren't to discourage the writing of the books. They're just simply there in case someone who finds those topics triggering or might not want to hear about those topics, can look away.

As people have said, they're sometimes used excessively and for topics that wouldn't often trigger trauma. Personally, I think they should be called content warnings cause that's so much more fitting. Trigger warnings are for serious topics not for fears.
I do also think that when people say things like "the smell of this laundry detergent triggers me" and people say "wtf that's so specific" is pretty dismissive. It's actually those specific things that can be super triggering because there are cases where a victim's abuser would always use that laundry detergent and it just transports them back.

Summary: content warnings are nice for big topics. And I think that on a personal level if you know of someone who said a certain thing triggers them, it's best to just accept that and understand that they have their reasons. If they say they're afraid of spiders, that's different.

YES... We've reached a very sad and dangerous state-of-affairs with ALL of this stuff.
Free Speech (and the words we choose to use) is in serious danger of becoming extinct. The "Free Speech and Freedom Net" on shortwave radio frequency 3850 khz every Sunday night at 8:00 PM PDT is a program I listen to.

@exitseven Yes, but the fact that it's NOT something that you need the internet to be able to hear it, makes it very hard for the "speech censors" to eradicate it. (although I do use KiwiSDR on the web to listen to it)

Now your book club, knows this has potential to trigger someone. As group you can decide to pass on the book or share.

This is how pc works.

Most people who hate pc are just annoyed that they have to think about others feelings instead of just themselves
