It's a song about the French Revolution... and it does contain some violent sections. Other countries have similarly themed anthems. For example, the US's Star Spangled Banner tells the story of a foreign nation (the British) bombing an American fort all night long... it too contains some violent sections.

I think it's a pretty realistic anthem. The core of an anthem is to inspire patriotism and love for one's home.
So many countries were formed and defended in blood and war.
"Let's go kick ass and water our crops with their blood!"

The melody is beautiful and inspiring, but the lyrics are pretty violent. Then again, so are the lyrics to the Star Spangled Banner.

It was made following the French Revolution by Claude Joseph Rouget de Lisle. So no wonder it speaks of blood and glory. Violent? Come on... I'm not french, but I speak fluent French and I know the first part my half. Love France.
