People are so caught up in being part of a chosen group and so scared of being kicked out of it, they simply stop trying to police the group. That is why you see both political and social groups becoming more extreme. Their unwillingness to polices themselves In effect creates a situation where the inmates do run the asylum.

I think the seperation into certain camps that loose the ability to compromise. The whole idea of democracy and republic is build on the ability to compromise and to bring people together but in modern times many people fight for their own position and aren´t able to recognize the legitimacy of the other person´s opinion.
