Pulled over for a light out... get a warning: Tags expired... get a warning with a followup a month later See a homeless person begging, they stop to see what they can do to help Volunteer positions with police training funded by community.

We already have them here, except they’re called Auxilary Police not pink police. They’re volunteers with some (but not much) training. They’re called into service to help with traffic control for major events, and serve as eyes and ears for police with law enforcement authority. Some retirees volunteer to serve as escort drivers for funeral processions. Seems to work out well.
The Dept he worked for had reserve deputies who were armed and had to have yearly training to stay certified. They also had an auxiliary deputies who didn't do law enforcement. They did crowd control, community outreach and such. I don't think any auxiliary deputies would want to conduct car stops. I live in a rural part of the country where guns are very common and help often 20 to 30 minutes away.
@pattij yea there is volunteer deputies and officers who are fully sworn and can make arrests but don't get paid, then they have part time positions, then there is the auxiliary units and I think they drive around and patrol and look for stuff but don't have any police powers they have to report it to police.
HOWEVER I do think they can write handicap parking tickets and enforce some minor parking violations community outreach traffic and crowd control and SOMETIMES in some areas they do have VERY LIMITED law enforcement powers mainly I think Florida they can transport prisoners' and help in arrests but that is the most of it
@Whatever2929292 That sounds almost identical to here, I don't know if they enforce even parking violations here. I know they do not go on patrol with regular deputies, they're not even allowed to participate in the ride along program civilians can do. But most are elderly and I doubt would have any interest in doing law enforcement. Some reserves if they complete the academy are even allowed to take cruisers home like the regular deputies do. They can work alone which reserves can do but typically don't. There are very few though who put themselves through the academy then don't become regular deputies. They usually have jobs that pay far higher than the county pays so they remain reserves.
@pattij reserve that was the word I was looking for. We have reserve, auxiliary, and part time. All are different. Reserve can and do make arrests and have the same law enforcement power as any paid officer though they are volunteers, another thing is part time where... they just work part time and again are sworn. Then there is auxiliary who as you said have no police powers and what they do have is very little (they can write parking tickets and direct traffic),
In some states like Florida I think they have posses which have LIMITED law enforcement powers. Where they can transport, they can help in arrests, among some other things. But they can't charge someone with a crime, write tickets, etc.
@Whatever2929292 One thing I always found amazing is in New York City they have auxiliary police who do have police powers, they have their own cruisers. Their identical to the regular police units except on the front fender it says "auxiliary". Same uniforms but above the patch it says Auxiliary. They aren't allowed to carry weapons but do car stops. 2 were killed not too long ago doing a car stop and 2 others killed by guys fleeing a botched robbery. One was wounded and basically executed. So far as I know NYC is unique in how their auxiliary officers operate.
We don't have that problem where I live. I live in a blue state. Because of Saint George Floyd, you can now drive 100 miles per hour in a school zone. She called 911. You could hear her little 2 year old girl crying in the background. They were both afraid for their lives. The 911 dispatcher said there was nothing she could do to help. This was all about the idiotic “defund the police” crap was happening. The police dispatcher told her to just drive safely.

Nope. Racism will appear in pink uniforms just as common in blue uniforms. Just because they aren’t armed doesn’t mean they can’t murder and get away with it. Solution is provide better police training as well as periodic mental health evaluations on the police and 3rd party ethical evaluations on the department.
Parents, schools, counseling, work training (ethics, diversity and inclusion, etc) all provide scenarios of what’s right and wrong. Writing all of that off with “there’s no way around human reactions” is an example of not teaching responsibility for their actions.
More or less. I've been trying for years to institute a civilian paramilitary armed only with blackjacks, but it's still illegal for the moment. I don't trust my regular police too much, to be honest - they are good people, but they are loyal to the State, not me.
My husband is retired law enforcement, the idea of doing car stops while unarmed seems really dangerous to both of us. Helping the public though is a positive. I'm just not sure it's a safe thing to be doing.

You can find videos of police being shot during car stops. The people inside often don't wait to see who's stopping them or why. Some will simply shoot first and find out later who they killed. I presume lightly armed means tasers or pepper spray. Doing social work is fine, risking being shot stopping cars is something totally different.

He was at a lakeside convenience store asking about the water depth at the boat ramp and how long it took a car to sink. They stopped him, while his partner was radioing in trying to find out who the person was he kept acting funny while my husband was watching him. Finally he wouldn't stop moving around and he drew his weapon. The guy was sitting on a.38 and the constant movement was to get him used to it and not really paying attention any longer so he could get to the revolver fast enough. It turned out he'd been involved in both a robbery and 2 murders. Had an auxiliary cop stopped him to just ask if he needed help or to inquire who he was he'd have shot them without a second thought.
That is EXACTLY right. Also, even with enforcing small things like parking violations which I think is great and it takes some of the workload off the cops and having civilians respond and take some of the reports on things in situations where you won't be fighting anyone.
But even then sometimes people can get physical with parking tickets.

The cop could just hang back in case something happens, and he could focus on law enforcement, while the social worker does de escalation and social interventions like helping people get to the right programs to get help and such.

outfits can be "fine tuned". well... a buffer zone shall we say between the triggered citizens and the edgy cops. There's trauma on one side for some people, and fear on the other. Got the idea after watching video of police talking about their jobs. They aren't all nasty people, but they have very difficult jobs. Doesn't take much for something to go wrong in that job.
Here in the Netherlands we have sort of police that is far less armed and just used for community service, interacting with the neighborhood and minor stuff (parking tickets, being drunk in public etcetera).

So what happens if they get in a confrontation with a violent criminal? Are they going to provide “counseling” to someone who just committed or is the process of committing a crime? And when you say “lightly armed” do they just have pepper spray or something? I’m sure that will work just great if they are confronting an armed criminal.
It's "the" solution to go back to that. Responsibility... taught at home, in school, up through society with consequences. That's the only answer there is. doesn't seem possible since we're corrupted so deeply. Would take some authoritarian action or massive social movement. That would fly in the face of all the videos showing things that go wrong when people enforce the discipline and rules.

What we have now is going to be more expensive... cops is not an attractive profession due to public perception... can't hire people... lower staffs and thus more crime... have to pay cops more to attract them. Your taxes are going up... and impactful crime going up. It only works as long as insurance pays... It's tricky to pull off... managing social collapse not easy.
I don’t think the color would really help, but in Europe, some regular police wear neon/light/white colors that make them stand out instead of appearing predatory or secluded. I’d support the idea of having a separate force that deals with community relations over issuing tickets and cracking down on violent crime, something that isn’t as militarized and people can find approachable instead of intimidating or a laughing stock.
I like that. I wonder if there is a division of "intensity" in the force. e. g. There's these nice guys, and the other guys which, may seem more like "SWAT". If you see them, you know they mean business and it's bad. Either back down, hit the ground, or person gonna suffer. It's tough because there's always exception scenarios.
Maybe not wearing pink. But in general, having them serve and protect, rather than be the brute squad, is a good idea. Too many police networks are militarized, and trained to be hammers that see everything as a nail.
this is a bad idea, you don't know what kind of incident it will be until it's over. you can't know if it is a harmless traffic stop. lots of cops die on "just a traffic stop"

Hold up. Walk me through how this would work. Let's say one of these dudes in pink pulls someone over for speeding or running a light or a busted tail light or whatever. Do they run the plates of the car before going up to the driver?
this is all going to be "it depends". they run the plates. no history of issues, give them a warning, make sure they are ok. report it... but generally don't fine unless they are an Ahole. discression permitted. history or warrant out for something minor (child support etc..), inform them they are due in court, as a courtesy they are being informed. Failure to appear means the tougher police will come to retrieve him. . severe offenender, call backup to arrest. there's all kinds of flaws... like each time they pull someone over is a chance to address some other crime. Poly Klass scenario is a case where cop too nice and she paid with her life. One solution doesn't work everywhere. Chicago, these people die by the dozens probably. My area.. honestly, we already have this... I don't have this insanity most of the time, pointless to waste my time and money on a bad bulb.

some people are law abiding and want someone to call for help. other people want to fight 10 bad guys on their own, and go to jail for shooting at them... that's the system. you make a mistake, you go to prison... better to outsource that risk to a cop who is paid for it... for many people.
I wouldn't call the cops unless I knew they were cool in my local area or as a last resort. It's a good way to get people and animals you care about killed.

yea, it could be "unarmed" or maximum of a concealed carry, like anyone else legally. The point would be to "re-market" police so they can be viewed in a positive light by the public... as a servant, rather than upholder of laws. e. g. run into someone who has a warrant (duante wright), give them a warning to turn them selves in by a given time. Probably won't listen, then go pick him up elsewhere. If there's no risk of arrest/cuffs, there should be less fear. Seems better to pickup those with warrants in other fashions and engage in a positive way. Gets tricky with things like Rayshard Brooks... that requires several pink police to escort him home. Arresting people (G. Floyd) is a high fault area causing risk to the public, and huge social damage. In general, seems they could be handled with less force and more "social". Market the successes... change perception. Some of these "pink police" are going to get hurt in the line of duty, no doubt.
