@CrazyGirl2 Ofc it is, the point I was making is you can't really do more than make it a crime, can't pass laws to punish someone before they commit a crime. Taking away a right is punishment if someone has done nothing wrong yet and adding more expensive steps to jump through will lead to rights being taken away for those without the time or money to continue.
Sad thing is even self defense cases, criminals families can still sue for civil damages even if the person defending themselves committed no crime.

Hi All, I'm an Australian so my opinion is not relevant to this American debate. But look I had my first gun at 5 yo so I have been handling them most of my life. After a few mass murder events here it was made very hard to have a gun. It hurt to get rid of my childhood guns but the truth is I hadn't used them for a long time.
I'd offer a few thoughts. The fundamental problem is pyschos having guns, ordinary people aren't problem
1/ In hunting (including vermin control on a farm) you don't need more than a bolt action - even a single shot will do. You are very unlikely to get off a quick second shot because the game is long gone before you can draw a second bead and is a moving target to boot. The exception would be where the game is dangerous and might be angry if you only wound it.
Automatic and semi automatic were developed to kill soldiers in war not for hunting.
2/ City dwellers don't need guns for hunting. Some will travel to hunt and fish sure but over all that is unlikely to be anything but a small percentage.
So on those two points I'd suggest it be hard for a city dweller to possess a gun. More pyschos in the city than on the farm too. Automatic and semi automatic are unnecessary so take those off the table.
Hand guns are problem too I am sure but I don't feel qualified to opinionate on them.
What is being portrayed in the news in a tragedy situation is the AR-15 which is not a rifle the AR-15 is considered a pistol. Look that one up I don't have time to go into all of it. Best thing to do is leave well enough alone. Guns have been a part of the USA literally since day one. My parents generation literally would have guns in their pick up trucks in plan view at school. Schools would even have shooting courses and competitions.
The question I would ask isn’t what guns we can ban etc, but rather…
What changed? We already have gun free zones, background checks. Permits/licenses required, what have you. We have a lot of measures in place for law abiding citizens.
As a law abiding citizen who also owns and Carrie’s fire arms if anything I’ve noticed we are allowed to carry in fewer and fewer places these days. So while guns are a hot topic where we can carry them is actually more controlled now then it was in generations past.
Yet we have MORE mass shootings now. (Often taking place in gun free zones)
The question should be why?
In my opinion it comes down to many things but an inanimate object is a minor part of the equation.
One area we should look at is mental health. Just my two cents.

The first thing cave men built once they discovered fire was a weapon. Carved stones into eventually put them on sticks to hunt.
Fighting with a weapon is to humans what Fighting with your claws and teeth is to tigers.
That means no matter what "law" is passed when a person feels to the need for violence they will always find a weapon. It might be a gun or a homemade bomb for all anyone cares.
You wanna solve the problem of shootings stop looking at the symptoms and go straight to the root cause. Stop letting children fall victim to years of bullying and abuse and learn to read the signs.

I realize this is probably violating constitutional rights, but SOMETHING TANGIBLE needs to be done about these mass shootings. Allow all gun ownership BUT, anyone buying an assault weapon like an AR-15 needs to be red-flagged. The police should have the authority to investigate this person, check for mental instability, see what they're fascinated with online, investigate their premises, and if this person is determined to be a danger, confiscate the weapons.
A known bully and high school dropout who suddenly buys assault weapons and a lot of ammunition rounds as soon as they turn 18 should automatically be a prime candidate for investigation.
Banishing all guns will never happen for many reasons. 1) it is in the Bill Of Rights and there are WAY too many Americans who would protest this right and defend this right with their lives. 2) way too many in circulation and in people's possessions. Many, many guns would get missed. 3) you are unarming out citizens and leaving most Americans defenseless against any possible enemy invasion. 4) way too much money involved. The people benefitting from current gun laws would fight tooth and nail 5) Drugs are illegal. Does that stop people from attaining? If someone wants something bad enough they are going to get ahold of it. 6) you are punishing the masses for the.00001 percent of people's decisions. 7) most gun owners are very passionate about their right to bear arms. Outlawing guns would send the country into a state of anarchy. 8) What are we going to do if the zombie apocalypse ever happens?

I guess decide what it's for hunting or home defence. Don't make AR15s ilegal but instead ban the future sales of AR15s, the manufactur of ar15s, the sale and production of 5.56 ammunition, ban the sale of ar15 parts, the production of magazines that hold more than 5 rounds, make it a yearly federal requirement that every year an ar15 owner must by an expensive license, make it a requirement that all ar15 owners have insurance. Let existing AR 15 owners kept them and do this and within 5 years there will be very few AR15s as they will be too expensive to own or buy.

Fully automatic machine guns are not ilegal, they are just extremely expensive to own and buy, at one time it was perfectly legally and easy to by a Thompson machine gun or a BAR. Those who leagally buy guns are scared and fearfull of others. Will use it at some point and usually becomes a first time second degree manslaughter or murder charge. Those who illegally buy guns have a pre-meditated purpose for it and usually just a matter of time before they act out with they're anger and exercise they're first admendment right with a bullet. Others who obtain a gun from a circumstance of being in the right place at the right time and would like to posses it for future nessesitys , usually are the responsible type.
I would make them all illegal unless you have a license. Make someone do some test to see what they're planning to use it for, how mentally stable they are and test if they know how to use it properly. And give them a limit to how many they can have on their name so they won't sell them to people without the license.
Better criminal background checks, Psychological evaluation if they have a history of violence, automatic firearms limited to antique collectors + strenuous background checks, prevent any firearm being sold over the counter in general purpose stores, raise minimum age of acquisition

The problem is that America is so rife with guns that it would be Prohibition all over again, if guns were to be totally banned.
Hence the proposal instead to ban some ammo, clips and gun magazines and heavily restrict others would be much better. A gun without it's clip, magazine and ammo is just a cudgel. Plus these are much harder to 3d print and make, than guns themselves.

None of the above. Do better reporting and have a national data base. Have better laws regarding crazy people getting guns or even make treatment available to crazy people. If somebody is batshit crazy and has lousy insurance which is usually the case because they are often unemployable there is no treatment available to them. These are the people that go off and get a gun and start shooting. The local cops are asked about the guy afterwards and nobody is ever surprised.
I'd suggest that all adults of sound mind and body be legally required to be trained and armed. A rifle at home and a pistol when out in public if they'd rather have something smaller and more comfortable.
Anyone who goes off the deep end would then fully expect to die almost immediately if they start a rampage.

Not an American. I support either: - A ban on personal firearms, to the level of most European countries, or - No ban on ownership, but a high age restriction (like 23-25 years), and prosecution of parents/guardians as accomplices to underage shooters (so they take supervision much more seriously)
The best gun control is none. Federal government needs to stay the hell out of our business and let the states do their own thing. Also, gun control only controls law abiding citizens, not the criminals meant to be controlled.

Background checks would help more than anything. Switzerland has tons of guns but no mass shootings because everybody is required to pass a background check and prove they know how to handle a gun.
in my opinion: attaching a mandatory psychological attest to the right of ownership. so that psychologically unstable, ill or immature aren't handed guns, just cause they have a clean criminal record.
I want to defend myself and my family before police arrives. And in some parts this can take more the 30 min. I am not a rich or a politician, I don't have my personal safety team around me.
How about actually arresting and locking up criminals vs giving them probation or dropping violent offenses down to misdemeanors?
