Why are women checked and frisked in closed boxes in public spaces like airport? Whereas, men are frisked openly?

Is there any reason behind this that makes sense or is it just a double standard? It just seem very unfair to me.

United States. I’ve also been through airport security in Spain, UK, and Israel. Same thing. Men pat down men, women pat down women, but I’ve been nowhere where they had “boxes” for either sex.

That's pretty nice, I live in India and it's truly a double standard here. Men are checked openly while women are checked inside the boxes even in New delhi.
