Just immediate chase. This Grand Rapids MI cop stopped this guy for an expired license. Legit minor traffic citation. Unsure if he was wanted or had a record…doesnt really matter.
The guy ran for it. And moments after this picture was taken- the cop shot him in the back of the head.
Should cops just let them run off at first? Call in a perimeter? Run the fingerprints all over the fckin car? The dumbass wouldn't have gotten away for long…
In the case of this scumbag who ran, in my hometown actually, he deserved to get shot- one less piece of garbage running the streets.
Generally, though, I'm not a fan of the police chase. I get that a fleeing felon could go on and victimize someone else (or if they have a person kidnapped), but in most cases it seems the police put the public far more at risk by chasing someone through the city than just letting them go, issuing a warrant (once ID is determined), and posting their face all over the city until they're found.
The problem with this is that the cops don't know. They didn't know if this guy had a gun, had just done something serious- or about to do something serious. So, there's immense risk in just letting the person go, in the same way that it's a risk trusting that the guy reaching into his pocket (in a car you just pulled over) is going for his cell phone/ wallet, instead of a gun.
Chasing yes, shooting for something minor where there was zero risk to life, no chance.
there is a thing called a judgmental shoot, where prior to go on arm guard, you have to assess if you are clear to open fire or not.
Things as stupid as that do not even appear as it’s blatantly No you can simply shoot someone for running.
People panic and do stupid things when stopped by police etc, there was an pensioner here that drove off after police stopped him to check if he was okay, he panicked.
If the person is stupid enough to run, they might have a warrant out for their arrest or drugs on themselves. Who knows what makes some people run? Do they actually believe that their butts are going to propel them fast enough to get away from cops? I think that police should continue to chase the people who think that if they can outrun a police officer or K-9 patrols they need a better plan or sit still and pay the price the first time instead of having another charge or more added to what they already have.
So a cop who's been through intensive fire arms training, and is fully aware of the legalities decides to shoot someone in the back over a minor offence. The fact its in the back proves he wasn't being attacked. If cops are killing people like this I wonder how many have died at the hands of people who carry for "self defence" for minor offences.
you could probably just read the news, because the anti-gun lobby/media prints every single one of these incidents when they happen. The people end up getting arrested and charged for it, bro. Let's not pretend/lie that they just get away with shooting people for random reasons with no consequences.
Why do they always have to run even even for minor shit? Either because:
1. Someone told him the best thing you can do is run away (unlikely but still possible)
2. He had illegal drugs on him (more likely)
3. Already had a warrant for his arrest for something else (most likely)
So my answer is no, cops should not stop giving chase because you have zero reason to run if you are innocent. Don't answer them anything and demand a lawyer (yes even if, and especially if you are innocent).
It is difficult to judge at the moment if giving chase is warranted. They could be intoxicated and a threat for the public. He might escalate whatever he did that justified running away next time since he will think he won't get caught. Most chases don't end up deadly. Should we stop all of them because sometimes it does? Will there be more deaths and injury if we let people run and criminals might escalate their activity since they are easily getting away with it or do we safe more life if by chasing them and making sure crime doesn't pay?
I honestly don't know. What I know is that immediate emotional outrage is complete bullshit and only helps to signal someone's virtue and has f*** all to do with caring about human life. It disgusts me to no end.
Did he deserve to be shot and killed over an expired license? Of course not. However:
1.) Where's the unedited, non-commentary, full complete story?
2.) Why did he run? An expired license is just a ticket. Or at most, you're arrested and immediately released after being processed and/or posting a nominal bond (usually between $50 to $100). That is, as long as you don't have any outstanding warrants. Logic tells me that he probably had a lot more going on besides an expired license.
3.) Playing Devil's Advocate, if the police officer decided not to pursue him, what if the suspect went on to immediately harm and/or kill innocent people? Then he'd be accused of being lazy and not doing his job.
So again, he shouldn't be dead... but when you choose to play stupid games, you're probably going to win stupid prizes.
Unless theyre wielding a machete or gun i think its unnecessary to shoot. Tranquilizers would be a nice alternative... expensive but still. Some cops get mad because they have to run and so just pull out a weapon instead. Need more cops with track and field experience, instead of donut eating lazies.

It's a judgement call on the cop's part. But now that eh shot him in the back of the head it is going to be long shit show for the media and a massive shit - sandwich for the cop. Let's be real - the guy is going to lose his job and spend time behind bars , not to mention no pension , no benefits.

Trigger-happy police will shoot with or without a reason. Body cams are no guarantee. Enforcing regulations on officers who turn them off needs to be ensured. If DAs and other officials give an officer carte blanche for turning it off for no reason, then the camera becomes meaningless.

@spartan55 i do marketing for my local municipality. The cops showed me how easy it is to catch most dumbasses on the run within minutes. Literally rat in a trap.

@Jamie05rhs That is only in the movies. Shooting a Running person... in the leg... while in pursuit... is MUCH harder than you think. Have someone take you to a gun range and experiment with drawing from a holster and firing at a moving target. Then imaging the adrenaline, etc. and it gets even harder.

This guy probably had a long police record and had ripped off plenty of people and was the perpetrator of many crimes. If he got away he probably would have just done a few more B&Es or maybe a snatch and grab.
I’m not 100 percent but I think once someone turns around to run and they don’t pose a threat to the officer they aren’t legally aloud to shoot the person unless the person is an extreme threat to the community I believe
I have not seen it but I have a feeling there is more to the story

Sure, if you want to let people continue to break the law and rob/rape/assault/and kill others while you’re trying to track down the guy you just let walk away.
In some circumstances where it's dangerous to chase them they should let them go.
Like if it's dark, no one should be chased down. Its too hard to see if they pull a gun or whatever. Let them go and keep a patrol looking for them later.
