Even though I am observant Christian, I believe Sex Work should be decriminalized, licensed, regulated, medically inspected and taxed. Those regulations should move it away from organized crime, drugs and human trafficking. G0d gives is Free Will, which includes being in that line of work or "contracting" in it. Many in it cannot make a living any other way and we need to leave them alone.

I think it should be legalized with regulation. I would be all for it, with the proper health precautions in place. The only place where it is legal in the US is in certain rural counties in the state of Nevada, and in licensed brothels. It is NOT legal in the big cities like Las Vegas or Reno.

There is also a question of enforcement. In New Orleans, prostitution is illegal, but there are brothels that have been operating continuously since the 1800s. I live in Honolulu. I once counted thirteen hookers on one block in Waikiki. The Honolulu police make an average of about one arrest per week for prostitution. One rumor was that they get kickbacks and arrest the ugly ones to keep the standards up. Another is that the police extort free services in exchange for looking the other way. When I lived in Memphis, four members of the vice squad were arrested by internal affairs for that.

@MikeInHawaii Wow I have not been to Hawaii in over 25 years, but I recall when I was there, there were a LOT of hookers on the streets in the Waikiki area. I was not inclined to go for it though as it wasn't quite what I wanted to do. I was wondering about how law enforcement viewed them, as I recall seeing police talking to them casually.

Prostitution really hasn’t rebounded since COVID. I think a lot of the customers were Japanese and the Japanese tourism is still way down. In fact, the tall, leggy blondes would almost never approach me or any other white man. They got top dollar from the Japanese.

Technically I don't think it is. Those are state laws not US laws.

As for why, it's the same reason it's illegal in most other parts of the world, including places that are known for sex tourism.
