Why is Russia a European country?

Why is Russia considered a European country, in fact the largest country in Europe, when 90% of its land mass is in Asia?

The way I understand it is that Russia, west of the Caucasus Mountains is European. In the way the city of Istanbul has a small piece of Europe in its borders bit the remainder of Anatolia is considered Asian. So it to is European and Asian/

Russia has the political/financial/cultural center in Europe major cites in Europe, significantly St. Petersburg and Moscow. There is a long history of distrust and fear distrust of Asians even before getting overrun by Mongols.
Though Stalin and Mao had treaties that pitted the two countries against the Capitalist's hegemony of the US and Western Europe (their words, not mine) even political expediency was insufficieant to jeep them friendly.

Russians are European, Russia is placed in the European continent by the United Nations. Russia is a European country that only conquered Siberia and most of it land in Siberia it’s uninhabitable. Russia is undeniably European. You will never Change someone’s origin by conquering other land. Is Denmark in North America I don’t think so. Russia is 100 European and it’s diverse like many European nations. Russians are Slavs. Russian are white peoples or gringos. About 80 percent lives in the European part of Russia and Russia occupies 40 percent of Europe land mass.

It comes from Russia proper, not the entire empire.

Besides that, the division between Europe and Asia has never been clear. Even with Russia proper, I never really considered it Europe. I have always thought of the Black Sea and the countries more or less north of it being the eastern edge of Europe.

It's similar to Turkey. I never considered that Europe either. In school we called that Asia Minor, which is a region of greater Asia.

Actually, only about 60% of its landmass is in Asia (the dividing line being the Ural Mountains), and it's considered to be European because of the culture, the people themselves (Slavic), and because most Russians actually live in that section of the nation that is in Europe.

I think the "Europe" is just as convenient way to classify Neanderthals who live amongst the stone dwellings of their ancestors. They share the sentiment that Merica is backwards and will often express anti-Americsn sentiments on cave walls, while listening to Eminem and eating BigMacs.

From what I remember from school days: Europe ends at the ''Ural'' mountains.
My speculation: Russia by history had more ties -and interaction- to Europe and so the Asian portion is just tolerated as an appendix.

@Snsl153 With all due respect, let me clarify American history. Prior to 1776, the current US area was more than "a bunch of English colonies". There were 13 English colonies along the Atlantic Coast., as well as the Minnesota-Michigan area. Spain controlled the territory in the Southwest (Texas to California) as well as Florida. France controlled the Louisiana Purchase area (sold to the US in 1803) that ran from Louisiana to Oregon. Russia controlled Alaska, and Hawaii was its own kingdom.

You don't need to "clarify history" for me, because I was of course referring the United States as a nation, not the territory it now occupies. Yes, I know about Florida being Spanish and Alaska being Russian (which it will soon be once again).

It is historically tied to European history, and very few Russians live in the Asian part. Saying Russia isn’t European is like saying America is an Arctic country because it owns Alaska.

Is it because most people live close to the west border? Its generally easier to trade with people if you can say we're just like you and let's be honest Russians don't look Asian.
