They make stuff up all the time. I attended a fellowship with a colleague that taught at a different college. The local newspaper wrote a hit piece in that college's president. The left had an agenda of replacing this guy with a moonbat. My colleague explained how the newspaper lied and how the story was rigged to portray the college president as incompetent and corrupt. I would believe him before I would believe the newspaper. Even when they are caught in a lie there is never an apology.

Assuming you mean news, the mainstream legitimate news rarely makes things up. They twist things around. They take things out of context. They blow things completely out of proportion. The have very serious selection bias. They are biased in their selection of pictures for stories. They editorialize (which isn't even news). The news is full of implied lies.

They rarely outright fabricate news. Everything they do combined might as well be made up though, because it has the same effect. When they present things in such a way that people believe things that aren't true, it's essentially a lie.

Occasionally the media doesn't know how to react to some event and just reports it factually. After 2-3 days the media works out how to spin the story and you see the reinterpretation happening in real time.

In my country during an election, a female reporter asked a political operator to dinner and the next day the front page had a critical review on his techniques of getting her into bed. I'm sure he was gauche but it had nothing to with non-sexual politics and it was fabricated.
