Mississippi House Speaker Philip Gunn says abortion should be illegal even for a 12-year-old rape victim carrying her father or uncle’s child. He made the remark to reporters in the hours after the U. S. Supreme Court struck down Roe v. Wade in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, allowing state abortion bans to take effect.

“What about the case of a 12-year-old girl who was molested by her father or uncle?” Associated Press reporter Emily Wagster Pettus asked the Republican speaker on the Mississippi House floor on Friday, June 24.

Gunn said he did not know “what the Legislature’s appetite” would be for ensuring child rape and incest victims could obtain abortions. The state’s 15-week abortion ban does not include rape exceptions, but a 2007 Roe v. Wade trigger law that could become effective soon would allow rape exceptions early in a pregnancy only if the rape was reported to law enforcement—which does not happen in most incest cases.

“No, (the law) does not include an exception for incest,” Gunn said. “I don’t know that that will be changed.”

“Do you think the Legislature should revisit that?” Pettus asked.

“Personally, no. I do not,” Gunn said. “I believe life begins at conception. Every life is valuable. And those are my personal beliefs.”

Daily Journal reporter Taylor Vance pressed Gunn further.

“So that 12-year-old child molested by her family members should carry that pregnancy to term?” he asked.

“That is my personal belief. I believe life begins at conception,” Gunn said.

My thoughts? What an asshole! How’s THAT for a thought? My guess is that if HIS daughter was raped by HIS (or her) brother, and 4months had passed, that he would fly her to NY or Cali, to get an abortion! The only positive side I do see here, is that this will result in MORE rapist uncles and stepfather’s being turned in to the police, so the girl can get the abortion… as for 15wks? That’s more than plenty of time… that’s almost 4 months, it only took me 4 weeks after missing my first period until I missed my second period and immediately knew I was pregnant and in a lot of trouble, so I told my mother that my Uncle was raping me and I that I thought I was pregnant! At the most I was 8wks pregnant and STILL had another two months to arrange an abortion under their new “restrictive” law. (Which by the way is more time to get an abortion than in ANY European countries, or most of the the rest of the world for that matter… and THAT’s Mississippi!) So as much of a heartless asshole as I truly believe this governor is, almost 4 months is plenty of time for anyone to get an abortion, ESPECIALLY if they were raped, because of how badly you just want it OUT of you! So I would have serious doubts that a woman was truly raped if she just sat around for more than four months to decide that she needs an abortion! I may be pro choice, but I am definitely NOT pro abortion, and when a man has had an abortion he can question my beliefs. Until then….

I thought it important for me to add the reason WHY this story of the Mississippi Speaker, impacted me SO personally. Here goes…
At the moment my uncle first raped me, it was just 14 hrs after I ceased being a 12yo girl myself! I took for granted that people on GaG who know of me, also knew that my uncle first raped me on my 13th birthday! Even though I WAS only13, when I missed that first period, I figured he’d gotten me pregnant! I was so worried, but when I missed that SECOND period, I ABSOLUTELY KNEW IT!
I had just turned 13, I was enduring near daily raping from my dad’s twin brother, and I KNEW that I was pregnant by him! It was all just TOO MUCH!
I can’t possibly explain what real, adult level life or death panic feels like to a newly turned 13yo girl! It was overwhelming! I was out of my depth, and I was drowning fast! So I did what any kid would do, in times of even normal childhood stress, I asked my mom for help! The idea that anyone would need 4 months to decide whether or not she wants the fetus of her rapist (especially incestuous rape) growing inside her… That feeling, of just knowing it’s right there inside you… growing! It’s too unbearable to be able to sit around for 4 months and do nothing about it!
I would REALLY have preferred Roe to remain the law, but 15 WEEKS? That’s almost 4 months… and this in Mississippi? This isn’t exactly the “complete outlawing of abortion” that our side promised was coming if Roe were ever overturned! Yet many here on GaG STILL insist that abortion has been banned! Still others accuse me of being an “anti-choice conservative!” Even though I’ve actually had an abortion, and I know exactly how traumatic it can be… But it is definitely LESS traumatic than women & little girls being forced to carry, and deliver their father’s, or brothers, or uncle’s, or even a stranger’s baby!
Forcing THAT on anyone… That’s not Christian love, that’s psychological torture, that it WILL result in suicide, and that is just pure evil!

I see how this could come across worse than just saying "I believe abortion after X weeks is immoral" but you gotta keep in mind that that means exactly the same thing.

If they stand by their principles, they believe that the baby is a person and valuable and has rights yada yada, after X weeks REGARDLESS of the situation of the mother. She could be 7. As long as she won't die from giving birth, then those beliefs directly implies that her having an abortion after X weeks is wrong, and she should have to give birth.

Absolutely disgusting. Anyone who believes a girl or a woman should carry a child out of incest or a rapist's baby is disgusting. I want NOTHING to do with those people. It's fucking cruel and inhumane to even suggest that. A girl or woman shouldn't even be required to provide proof of the rape. She should have every right to have the abortion if she chooses.
