Study Estimates Rape Caused 65,000 Pregnancies In States With Abortion Bans

A study published Wednesday estimates that there have been nearly 65,000 rape-related pregnancies across the 14 states that banned abortion in the wake of Roe v. Wade’s crumbling 18 months ago.

The study, published in the peer-reviewed Journal of American Medicine, was led by Dr. Samuel Dickman, a Montana abortion provider and plaintiff in several lawsuits challenging the state’s abortion restrictions. Dickman’s team said the results of their study indicated that the four rape exceptions in place across those 14 states do not provide sufficient access to abortion.

“In this cross-sectional study, thousands of girls and women in states that banned abortion experienced rape-related pregnancy, but few (if any) obtained in-state abortions legally, suggesting that rape exceptions fail to provide reasonable access to abortion for survivors,” the study concluded.

I'm actually divided on this issue. As much as I find the majority of abortions distasteful and the result of reproductive irresponsibility between a couple rather than something like rape, I'm very concerned about possible perverse incentives in banning abortion.

I prefer we promote values like nuclear households and responsible sex between committed monogamous couples through gentle persuasion rather than the force of law. Yet everything nowadays is so divisive and out of control. I can see why politicians are at least tempted towards drastic measures on both sides.

Lots of conservatives (including me) point out how single-parent households and baby mamas are so risky for a child's well-being and to society at large, but I'm concerned that simply banning abortions might just create more of such children absent proper biparental care and not just magically make people more responsible about having safe sex.

Something I am very much in favor of is simplifying and streamlining the system of adopting children. I'm admittedly not very knowledgeable on the subject but I've heard that there are as many as 36 waiting families for each child placed for adoption. That seems like quite the backlog. Yet there are children spending their entire adolescent lives in foster care, and such children tend to be statistically worse off in terms of crime, substance abuse, teenage pregnancy, anxiety, depression, etc, than even children raised in single-parent homes. Even though I lack much expertise on this subject, something seems really wrong here with the system.

I'm mostly just in favor of whatever successfully mitigates unwanted pregnancies. Banning abortion seems like the heaviest-handed solution and one I'm not sure will even work. I'm "anti-unwanted pregnancies".

I'm divided on this subject I feel if the mother and baby are going to die then the mother should have an abortion but what about these young girls raped by their biological fathers, brothers, uncles pretty sick.
