I am now but I wasn't always. These are my changes.
1. When I am grocery shopping and put things in my cart and I decide I don't want them - I put the item back where I found it.
2. I always put the grocery cart back in the proper place.
3. I don't sneak in food and beverages when I go see a movie.
4. I always say thank you to people that help me.
Etc.

Actually, i think it’s kind of the opposite. It’s one of the things everyone else just takes for granted. We had to give it a name as a way to signal virtue. Ell oh ell!
That said, the US isn’t as unique as you seem to imply. There are very few things about US culture that didn’t originate in Europe, primarily the UK.

Actually I do this. I stop at red lights at 5AM when nobody is watching, I put shopping carts back where they belong and I don't cheat
