The secret behind it is that it never really existed. People keep telling others, especially the younger generation how to become better people but they rarely ever exemplify it themselves. At most its a thin veneer upheld to give the impression of a better society.
Ell oh ell!
I posted a few images that represent common examples of the honor system from my own experience. It definitely exists and it has for a long time. I’m just wondering if it’s getting worse or staying the same.
It depends on what you mean. I don't challenge people to duels because they insulted my honour but I do conduct myself honourably because it's the basis of what makes you a decent person.
Like others have said very few people steal from honesty stalls, they don't just exist on rural roads either I've seen them in towns, you can even get whole stores based around the honour system.
Warped. Modern interpretation of "honor".
Whaddya mean?
Just that people have warped it into opportunities rather than caring for fellow man. "Why should I" mentality.
No... and Yes.
There are several farmer's stands along rural roads in our area. They are left unattended. People take what they want and leave the money in a box or pail. I'm sure some don't pay, but it's rare. The honor system is still around.
God is watching.

Mostly, yes. There's been a couple of times I was unable to and it made me feel like crap.
That’s good! That is how it persists.
There is no honor anymore and there is a lot of hunger. Put a stand like this on the road and hungry people will empty it and leave nothing.
There are stands like that on roadsides all over rural America. They’re quite popular and rarely empty.
The “update” was actually meant to be a response to your comment. I still see unattended stands somewhat often. When there are people there, they’re usually restocking and collecting the money. Not just standing around waiting for customers.
It’s unfortunate that some people don’t see it at all. I can see how it would contribute to a general belief in the decline of civilization.
Ecclisiastes 1:9 "what has been will be again. What has been done will be done again. There is nothing new under the sun".
Man's nature has not really changed since we left the caves. I wouldn't say the honor system is failing. I'd say society is becoming less connected, ergo less empathetic.
Honor requires some system of accountability, be it enforced by religious believe or believe in social consequences among those who's well being indirectly reflects your own.
As a culture rejects religion that divine consequences goes out the window, as we become more diverse that social Consequences goes out the window too with the amount of whom ever benefit sharing anything in common with you.
So more and more people will simply pull back
It started eroding a long time ago. I try to, but it only works when the other person reciprocates
This has gotten exponentially worse since 2020.
I was confused by this, the honour system is the titles and honours such as MBEs, OBEs, knighthoods and lords. These are always bestowed by the monarch but are often political appointments.
Negative. The honor system is defined as a system by which people are trusted to abide by a code of conduct without supervision or regulation.
Well when I googled it this was the top search result honours.cabinetoffice.gov.uk/.../
When i looked up “the honor system”, literally all of the results were akin to the definition i shared. I suspect you used different search parameters. By the by, google is a lousy resource and that may have been the problem from the start.
Indeed. I did try the English spelling and got the same results near the top. Further down were articles explaining the difference between the two spellings.
I had to actually plug in some of the other terms you used, like “knight”, “OBE”, et cetera before i got articles about feudalism and chivalry hierarchies. Now i’m stuck in that rabbit hole. Thank you very much!
I’ve looked into it briefly in the past. OBE was referenced in “Peaky Blinders”. I didn’t realize it was a custom going back so far or that it’s still recognized today.
No, because honor is dead.
I strongly disagree.
Well, i posted images of common ways in which the honor system is still in use. I’m just not seeing it as much as in the past and wondering if others are seeing the same.
I follow the Code of the West
Do unto others before they do unto you?
