Can Synthetic Life ever attain true sentience? What does it mean to be alive, to be ethical, intelligent, or to even exist? Which of these characteristics are necessary to be truly self aware of oneself, of one's own existence? Can a manufactured construct have the potential to be truly alive?

It depends on if you believe a soul is needed to be sentient. If you do, there's still more philosophical and scientific progress required.

If there is no soul, then sentience is the coalition of our senses being processed in such a way that two nural nural networks build exactly the same way but trained in slightly different ways should develop two different "personalities" similar to how twins work

If there is such a thing as a soul, and if it is like a sim-card in a massively complex neural network of biological mainframe infrastructure, than who is the master programmer? What is the purpose of the source code used by this source💽, or God🙏 entity. Are we organic constructs of biomechanical design in a progressive self-motivated- learning compatible search engine of carbon - based motivational programming, for a specific intended purpose? Am I overthinking this question about source code dynamics and program-operated- intent (user) as a reference guide (👍-Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy) to that esoteric abstraction😇 known as a soul? Alright, but we don't really know what the nature of reality is for sure. It could be a simulation and the beings who "built" this world see our whole existence as a novelty, it could be that God is actually a collective of all conscious and non conscious energy that makes up reality and we are all one and creates of our own reality. It could be that time is just an illusion and free will is just an illusion and just like how an ai or computer will come to the same mathematic calculation every time, down to our DNA everything was always destine to play out like this and it's a miracle we even exist.

There's a lot of evidence to support all of these theories but for now it's very uncertain.

Current AI can only do what we programmed it to do. It seems like AI is never going to exist because what we call AI today is machine learning, and not an intelligence. In other words, I think not because we are teaching AI, AI teaches us nothing we didn't already know.

Does it, because I would question the ability for Tru comprehension and understanding an AI has of the subject matter it processes. Can an A. I. determine a course of action without a pre-programmed set of protocols or list of options selected in by a user or programmer? Can an a A. I. relate to a value system that quantifies a decision meaking process based on right or wrong printcipal ideologies? Does a computer intelligence know why it should do the right thing, or even what is good or bad, necessary or uneccessary, good or evil? Can such an advanced computing system know why it should act on the data it recieved and processes, to interpret that information in meaningful motivation based action? The ability to make a decision, rather than just run a program because of some automated imperatives dictating it's actions, rather than being utilized to enable independent thought and action?

As a developer and database designer for over a decade, no. This is moronic to even consider. Its understandable a lay person might think so but its true science fiction. Nothing we have right now would even lead anyone to logically believe this is possible. Maybe with completely unforeseeable technology that does not exist but that would be like a caveman predicting airplanes before even discovering fire. So sure its possible in that regard but its not likely from anything we have even developed. It would not be like a computer as we understand computers.

As a person that likes to ask questions, no question is moronic, unless someone thinks they already know the answers. Synthetic Life does not yet exist, so who is too know what is possible in future R@D or not. To be able to become sentient, that entails a broad range of possibilities based on how one's enterpretations of that definition play out with the increasingly diverse applications of organic and inorganic technologies.
My point, nothing is impossible and no question is moronic except for those deliberately asked to undermine participation in discussion threads.

The concept of AI reaching the level of sentience is like asking Ford if we should be concerned about faster than light travel... like that's realistically a concern with the 2023 models. SMH. According to Ray Kurtzweil the human brain has already been mapped and a computer will be designed to mimic the human brain. It will work like a human brain with the speed and accuracy of a digital computer.
