5.8K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. Probably not. The Republican party on the whole has changed very little, and even back in the 1800s their view on freeing the slaves also included deporting them back to Africa. The Republican view on human trafficking is still pretty much the same, and they were eventually the party that pushed for both an expansion of rights as well as the Civil Rights Act, despite Johnson trying to take credit for it.
The first major shift they had was becoming a party of smaller government, which was largely in response to FDR's administration. Prior to that, the Republicans had no real issue with authoritarian government.
Another shift is immigration. Until really near the end of Bush's term, the Republicans were much more willing to ignore illegal immigration, and the Democrats were the ones who wanted border walls. It's also been a historical statistic that the Democrats are the more war-hungry party, and that didn't really change much until after the 2003 Iraq Invasion, but that shift only lasted until Obama got in office and suddenly they were okay with Libya, Syria, Yemen, Woman, Somalia, and now Ukraine, so that hasn't really changed either.
Now the Republican voter base sort of follows a cycle, and right now it's in an anti-government, anti-corporate, war-weary, nationalistic America-first posture most comparable to the atmosphere that led to the election of Dwight Eisenhower.

The Republican party formed in 1854 and soon after the Emancipation Proclamation was released in 1863 to end the Democrat mess of slavery. That didn't stop the Democrats from trying to stop it with a Civil War, and slow progress with the formation of the KKK to hunt down Black Republicans that wanted to be free men, Jim Crow laws to oppress minorities, redlining via the New Deal, and even today the Democrats push racial politics. Republicans don't have anything to do with your slavery dreams dude. California did try to repeal civil rights legislation to allow discrimination in the work place recently though. Nope, if you want to go back to slavery, your party of choice is the Democrats. They believe in mob rule. They attack the rule of law. They push concepts like "Democracy" and popular votes. A republic is about maintaining the rule of law, so that everyone's rights as defined in the constitution are protected even when the mob wants blood. Republicans believe in the Republic. It's right there in the name...

+1 yNo, but people like you would have. The moral framework necessary to oppose slavery was in tact 200 years ago. Folks had for instance, the value that everyone is equal because everyone is imbued with unalienable rights due to their connection with the divine.
The smart, free-thinkers (who today fall on both sides of the political isle) were able to realize that slavery did not conform to the widely held values of that time period, and so they opposed slavery.
On the other hand, there were stupid, barbaric, mindless zombies like you, incapable of free-thinking. These people adopted the world-view of the herd, because they were incapable of thinking for themselves.
You and the other mindless zombies of modern times are not in favour of slavery like your predecessors; rather, you are radical left-wing idealogues who credit all of the world's ills to racist systems and tendencies that do not exist on the scale necessary to cause them. Often times these lesser folk will accuse people they disagree with of being racist as a result. This is because they are incapable of imagining that any adversity they encounter personally or at the level of the society and politics could be due to anything other than racism.

If a black person wants to be a Republican today, the Democrats call them white supremacists. Why would Democrats do that? Don't they think that black people deserve a choice? Do the Democrats only think that white people deserve the right to choose?

When Larry Elder was running for the governorship of California, a white, pink-haired Democratic bitch with a gorilla mask, through an egg at his head. The Democrats LOVED it, because the left doesn't like blacks thinking on their own and leaving their plantation.
People need to wake up and see which party is the real racist party. Republicans fought and died to free the slaves owned by Democrats.

Tell me you don't understand history or politics, without telling me you don't understand history or politics.
Also, using modern terminology of a "Republicans" to describe America 200+ years ago? Now tell me you're a dumbass, without telling me you're a dumbass.
This question clearly wasn't asked in good faith, as you're trying to paint conservatives/republicans out to be racists, "like they always have been." What you call "Republican" by modern standards, didn't even exist back then. It's like asking "would 4chan users have raped their wives if they lived in the 50s?" You obviously only want people to say "yes," to validate your worldview.
And no, I'm not even a Republican or right-leaning, before you try to strawman me.
40 Reply1K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. You ask the wrong question. Most people these day who talk about slavery really do not understand it. How do you think the black people were taken from Africa to begin with? By blacks of course. White people would have been killed on sight had they stepped foot on that continent back then. The slave traders were black and sold other blacks into slavery after bringing them to the United States to start with.
So the real question should be would todays blacks have been slave traders 200 years ago? would they sell the rival gang into slavery to get rid of them?

+1 yIf you study history, you realize that acceptance of slavery was a compromise that the Founding Fathers accepted in order to get the 13 colonies to declare independence. Party affiliation or philosophy didn't matter, it was something that had to be done. John Adams in particular could not accept slavery until Benjamin Franklin convinced him that it was the only way the United States of America would ever become a country.
00 Reply 8K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. Nonsense like this question is why I think there should be a peaceful partition of the US into two countries. Anyone dumb enough to believe that is someone dumb enough to commit mass murder of political opponents.
00 ReplyNo, that's democrats that founded the kkk and supported slavery.

A excerpt from a Washington Post article:
“Enslavers came from all parts of the political spectrum. The Post’s database includes lawmakers who were members of more than 60 political parties. Federalists, Whigs, Unionists, Populists, Progressives, Prohibitionists and dozens more: All those parties included slaveholders.
By the eve of the Civil War, there were almost equal numbers of Democrats and Republicans in the 36th Congress, which met in Washington from 1859 to 1861. The Democrats, including those who belonged to Democratic splinter groups, counted nearly 100 slaveholders among their ranks, a Post analysis found. The Republicans, which had emerged as the party of abolition, had just one slaveholder.”
