Is there a reason why people keep addressing me as ma’am?

I get it, I’m not 21 anymore but I’m not 55 either why I should be called ma’am. Like for example the lady at the store addressed me as ma’am and she’s older than me! She said “ma’am your daughter is running out the store” (my daughter is a very rambunctious toddler) and of course I ran after her and got her.. but the point is the lady knew I was young enough to have a small child so why use ma’am and not miss?

It tends to be a regional indoctrination, most common in the Southern US or Midwest. Kids are taught it is rude to not use Sir or Ma'am. Don't take it personally. They mean nothing by it. I can understand how it can be seen as aging us... something people generally don't like seeing. Just see it as their indoctrination and don't take it personally.
