Am I the only one who HATES being called ma’am?

Since turning 25, I’m consistently called ma’am whether I’m at a restaurant, checking out at a grocery store, etc. I turning 26 in a couple weeks and I’m extremely insecure about my age. I was called ma’am by 3 people in one day recently and I began crying in my car because I can’t take it anymore. I don’t need the constant reminder that I’m getting older. I don’t think it’s a respect thing, because I was never called ma’am until I turned 25 and I live up north. This is one of the top reasons I’m now using anti aging products crazily and I feel I look significantly older than I am. I’ve never seen other women in their 20s called ma’am so much and I’ve had friends say they aren’t called it this often. It’s becoming overwhelming now.

Hey! You are not the only one! I am 2 weeks away from being 26 and I get called ma'am quite a bit more than I thought I would, especially at work.

I am not a fan, but I will admit that ma'am is much better than "hun" or "sweetie" or any crap like that.

Honestly, that’s life I hate to say. Women seem to take this harder than men. I don’t know what to say really cause at my age, 44 I don’t feel the way you do. People do call me sir, but I don’t take that as an age thing all the time. I call others sir as well who are probably younger than me just because I don’t know their name. I’ve realized a lot in life that as men get older we seem to be happier whereas women tend to not be as happy.

I don't mind being called sir. I always figured that someone would either be calling me that because they don't know my name or I am in the south and it's frowned upon by the culture for children to not refer to adults by those titles, it's pretty stupid if you ask me.

You need to get over it and stop your whining because you’re only gonna be called it more as you get older. I get called “sir” all the time it’s no big deal. I even still get called “boy” informally sometimes. Think nothing of it. It’s just a word.

As for YOU: I see 'Madam' as a sign of respect and polite manners. It's not age related, other than it's unusual to be used for underage persons.

Wouldn’t worry about it. Many are conditioned to address ladies this way, it’s manners. I do it sometimes with strangers. But in casual conversation, no need for such formalities.

It's normal, in my country women don't like to be called ma'am, when I realized how much of that, I started calling them "doñas", it means a woman older than the ma'am.

It could be a respect thing. Any woman in superior position in a corporation or group should be called ma'am. In fact in the military, if you don't call your female superior ma'am, the results would not be good for you.
