The problem is that the anti-2A people aren't really offering an effective solution to the problem of mass shootings and they know that. The best background checks in the world wouldn't have stopped Uvalde. They want to pass the buck to the police, but then be shocked that the police aren't necessarily able or willing to respond to violent threats. The reality is that guns objectively save more lives than they take and that fact doesn't sit well with people who want to take away the guns.

I personally don't think anyone should have guns, but I'd rather have guns and teach everyone how to use them safely over making sure that criminals are the only people with access to guns.

Very good question, and I have the answer you're looking for. The reason is because they don't really care about people getting killed. They only care about getting guns out of the hands of law abiding citizens. All they want to do is disarm the public so they can collectivize power. That's all there is to it.
