Just to update…the arguments pro gun are:
1) it’s just like a truck: really? Can we have the same regulations for guns? Crickets.

There are countries with mass gun ownership and nowhere near the same level of gun crime as the USA; almost all gun crime is committed by handguns, which are often obtained illegally. The issue with America is that the country is so large that the authorities cannot be omnipresent, thus requiring the need for personal protection; and lets be clear, if guns were unavailable the people seeking to do harm would use other means; e. g. a vehicle is far more lethal than a gun per impact, the same for a rock.

The only thing that can stop them in those scenarios; especially with low law enforcement presence, is a good guy strong enough to neutralise the suspect. Banning lawful people from obtaining them just removes the level playing field of deterrence, and allows criminals to still obtain them through illegal means.

The other 2/3rds being reasons for the 2nd Amendment are these:
1. In Pennsylvania, the people who were not Quakers feared that the peace-loving Quakers who were the majority there would ban guns, so these non-Quakers were concerned about protecting and providing for themselves and their families.
2. Simple efficiency. 232 years ago, raising an army to combat invasion in a country as large as the US was not feasible at the time with a national army stationed in only a few places. So, having citizens armed who could join "militias" (now, the National Guard) to fight invaders made it feasible to have an adequate army formed in short order to counter the invasion.

I am not opposed to guns, but I think they need to be at least as well-regulated as motor vehicles. I don't see much of a need (*) for normal folks to have an AR-15. I don't have a problem with National Guardsmen, military, or police, or private security firms owning them as part of their job.
But a hunter doesn't need one.

(*) As for home defense, well, if you live in an area in which you need an assault rifle to feel safe, then:
1. You might want to consider moving.
2. Then the people coming for you will have at least those weapons and will simply outgun you by numbers.

As for protecting ourselves from a tyrannical government, that's wishful thinking used by the NRA and other conservative groups to create a reason for people to be passionate about guns. The reality is that the vast weaponry, resources, and intelligence available to the federal government is inconceivable to most people.

When I worked in a defense think tank 30+ years ago, people like me got paid a lot of money to come up with new and improved ways of killing people. The other group got paid a lot of money to come up with new and improved ways of preventing what the first group came up with. It was a giant mental arms race - but we learned all sorts of interesting things that I cannot discuss.

In Lewiston, Maine there are laws that are supposed to protect people with mental illness from having firearms. The truth is that somebody did not do their job. You can pass all the laws you want but if they are not enforced people will still die.
In the state where I live there is a mandatory year in jail for possession of an unregistered firearm. It was enforced when it first passed but the DAs stopped enforcing it because 90% of the people that were arrested were gang members and it was determined that the law was racist. What we really need is better education at that level (we could do more at the preschool and elementary school levels also), and that includes more of what used to be called vocational education. Have you actually looked at IRS or Census data on how much tax is paid per income quintile or how much of personal income taxes are paid by top income earners? You obviously haven't. Now we do have regressive taxes as well that push up effective tax rates (what people actually pay) for middle- and low-income earners and lowers it for higher earners, but to say "the top 10% pay nothing)" isn't accurate. Besides, if you tax them more, that means less dark money for your party!

The debt issue goes way beyond debt related to higher ed. And it affects everyone except the people at the top in terms of wealth. You'd be surprised how many people making 100k a year live paycheck-to-paycheck.

I don't think we have a lack of educated workers- what we have is a lack of suitable jobs for some of them. That doesn't mean we rest on our laurels- international competition is far to great for that.

And, yes, the trades are great, but not everyone can do them, though as you know, I think we need to push them harder to high school students. The ones I taught were actually well aware that college was not optimal for many of them.
