Each of us has political beliefs, things we think are important. The state or country we live in has certain political beliefs, usually based on the opinions of people who live there.

Your beliefs vs the beliefs of where you live? Do they agree? Are they radically different? How do you deal with it if your beliefs differ greatly from those of where you live?

The gov't in the place I live, and some (but not all of) the residents here, have turned me into an anti-woke, anti-human rights/everyone's equal and sane and rational, anti-environmentalist. And I was the biggest recycler, proponent of equality, and animal and nature-lover all my life; until recently.

This morning I woke up and turned on the local news (which I have been avoiding because it infuriates me so much, the local gov't decisions being made - way more than any other city's news, which I started watching instead), and there was a news story about another residential building that will be going up in the neighbourhood by the biggest university, and some people want to stop it because there is a pair of eagles who have a nest there. One pair, that's two birds vs. several hundred humans who desperately need housing. The developer already has a plan for 'relocating' the birds, which is to place a metal cone over the nest, when empty, and the birds will house elsewhere. "This typically works well."

My city has been in a housing affordability crisis long before covid. Cost of living is through the roof and has been for years, decades, even, but I keep seeing examples, every single week if not day, about how we, the citizens, must pay more for what is basic necessities. Need to throw out something that doesn't fit in the regular garbage bins? You need to bring it to a recycling plant. And now pay a fee to do so. Not only are you theoretically breaking the law if you don't, but you have to pay to 'be a good citizen.' Oh, and own a car, and pay for some of the highest gas prices on the continent. (Again, always, and before covid and Putin went amok.)

On the TV, at 8pm on network, you can watch a show about drag queens. "Canada's Drag Race" is a 10-episode, one-hour original competition series that follows Canadian drag artists as they compete for the title of “Canada's Next Drag Superstar.” Each episode tests their talents and challenges them to master singing, dancing, acting, impersonation, costume making, and improvisation." I support gay rights, the right to marry, all that. I worked with many and though bitchy quite a bit and gossippy and talking behind others' backs, I was fine with them otherwise. I've been to drag shows. I had a gay friend for decades who kept dragging me to them (ironic, right) and insisting that I should love them. Not only did I get insulted by a lesbian for being "Little House on the Prairie" - meaning, too conservative), I found their caricatures of women to be the very worst, and most exaggerated, ugly sides of 'women', but were their, specific, interpretations of them. In fact, they themselves were more catty than real women. I don't care if people are gay, etc., doesn't matter at all to me, but the gay pride parade this month prevented me from being able to leave my apartment and drive to another city to go do an errand, because there were that many road closures all day long. And I, like many, do not like parades, of any sort, never have. Especially naked parades, which I have also seen, in another city I lived. That is way TMI. Keep it in your pants, in your house. Anything you want to do there is fine by me, and a whole bunch of us. We will also not be dancing naked on floats.

My basic rights, and economic necessities, are constantly being affected, and limited, by my gov't and their decisions to project an image of inclusivity, social morality and superiority, and to be a leader in the green movement, worldwide. They keep setting unrealistic, knowingly unachievable and extremely costly goals, because they want the status of being the world's most green city by... [fill in the blank.] Meanwhile, almost none of the local residents ever have a hope in hell of making it financially here, owning property, etc etc. It's owned by foreigners now. They don't even live here, many of them. I am now a person, despite all evidence to the contrary of the past, think I live amongst virtue-signallers, who value that more than the actual quality of life of the citizens, all packaged into tiny boxes, stacked high in the sky. Maybe that's why they legalized recreational weed here - to pacify us and make us think we are not going insane, when there are many reasons to. 6 stabbings/day, random attacks, we are now averaging. Huge mental health problem. Fentanyl crisis. (To be fair, all the other cities I look at have these problems right now too. But considering our size, and the rapid decline here, it's a bit more surprising if you look per capita. But maybe not, because we are the third densest city in North America now, if you exclude Mexico.)

Move somewhere else, then? My thoughts exactly. But I have lived and visited other places, and they've all shot up in cost now too, and every place has rampant crime in comparison to the past, and no place is affordable, not even the smallish towns that I came from, long ago when my modest and environmentalist-type father first chose to live and live a simple life, off the land, as much as possible. Those days are over. We keep everyone alive, as long as possible, because death is hard, loss is hard, and big pharma makes a shit ton of money off of us in doing so, and even where my father lives now, in supposed Native Indian we-care-the-most-about-the-land, they shoot bears, cut off all their paws, and leave them dead in a ditch on the side of the road. Respect for nature, my ass.

I don’t think my true political beliefs match anywhere, lmao. Maybe one of those tribes in the South American rainforest that have never encountered our brand of society, those are the last people living as nature intends, as I see it.

But my forced-to-function-in-all-this-society-madness beliefs…. a little. Massachusetts is supposedly a blue state, but the so many of the white people here are so racist, it doesn’t always feel blue. The Kennedys aren’t really a thing here anymore, so the Irish Catholics don’t all vote Democratic the way they did in the 20th century. Our young people are pretty progressive, I’d say, but the old guard feels conservative, and like, “angry-conservative”, haha.

It’s also harder to gauge in the Trump era, because Trump supporters are often, in some part, people who weren’t really active in politics before him, they more got caught up in the circus of his whole campaign, and they liked the “free speech means I can use racial slurs in public” aspect, lmfao. Like these aren’t the same people who were going to John McCain rallies 15 years ago, this is a whole different breed of people. We’re WAY past arguments of fiscal responsibility and family values😂 Not the best and brightest that the right wing has to offer, to say the least. I don’t mean to turn this into an anti-Trump thing, where I’m going with it is more that Trump supporters are LOUD, and in-your-face, so I’m never sure if we’re turning red here or if this particular guy just brought a lot of people out of the woodwork, and once he’s gone for good (however that plays out, whether he’s indicted and imprisoned or if he wins in 2024 and does his second term), those people will simmer down.

I live in a fairly wealthy area, one of the neighboring towns is SUPER rich, and those towns are where I see the flags and signs on the lawns for liberal causes. Poor towns and cities, not as much activism, but you’ll see BLM signs and things like that. Then there’s one town that’s as middle class as it gets, and THAT’S the town that has Blue Lives Matter and Trump signs and bumper stickers, Let’s Go Brandon, FJB, all that, and literally every telephone pole along the main route through town has a thick band of black tape with a thin band of blue tape in the middle, I assume it’s a “thin blue line” pro-police sentiment. That’s the town where I feel like everyone is that middle manager barely getting by, and if they juuussssttttt could get to that next level, life would be better. I feel like that’s the exact person right wing politics caters too now. “Everything would be great if someone else wasn’t fucking up my trajectory.” The right and left all have their brands of populist politics, and the right wing version is that you work hard all day just have your taxes taken out to pay for some deadbeat. The left wing’s is “the man” is keeping you down. Everyone gassed up on the same concept, some elite group getting all the good stuff, and the rest get the shit end of the stick, they just get told differently who the villain is, haha. But America wants you thinking “I’m ALMOST there! Just need to get [X] out of the way and I’ll be on Easy Street!”, which is likely untrue for all of us, sadly😂

It depends on how local it is.

In my immediate area, yes.

In my state, sort of. I live in the strongest bellwether state. That means the state voting pattern closely resembles the country as a whole. So the state would be a little to the left of me.

In the US, it's similar to my state, so a little to the left of me.

Internationally, the US is liberal, so compared to much of the world I'd be liberal.

In the UK most towns tend to always fall to one of the 3 mayor parties in England or to one of 4 in Scotland and Wales. But its rare to get more than 40% of the vote so even if you win most people don't want you. Also most people just lean slightly left or right and will share some views with the opposite side. Its not like the USA where everyone is far right/left and supports their side 100% and wants the opposition shot.

I lean slightly to the left of centre and not as some on GAG claim a flag waving communist.

No. I'm independent and live in a (relatively speaking) Liberal part of South Korea. But most of Korea leans (relatively speaking) conservative. Family values, anti-woke BS (the latest prime minister got elected on being against woke culture), and being religious.

Back in the US, I lived in a super-blue part of the country, Philadelphia. In 2016, Hillary Clinton's ugly f*cking face was on every building, bus stop wall, and mail box, and and it was just ASSUMED you were going to vote for her if you lived there. It's like the California of the Northeast, which is NOT a good thing.

I live in Kentucky. The governor is liberal, but the presidential votes are always republican. I think abortions should be legal, there should be trans bathrooms, gay marriage is perfectly fine. I think we should try to stop so much immigration, but not torture people and not take them from their families.

I am anti-corruption in a corrupt country.

Literally one dude told the media that he woke up, and a brand new sports car just appeared on his garage.

And one gal told the people that someone deposited a huge amount of money on her bank account.

Another dude literally ran over a traffic officer, and the police already identified the person but took days to get a court order. And still not arrested the person. The person's mother has the gall to tell the media that her son was traumatized due to the public scrutiny. Oh and they are friends with the Police head so there's also that.

We got a high ranking politician whose family plundered the gov't coffers/national reserve a few decades ago - and now they are back. Go democracy.

Those are just a few samples...

And all those people still hold key positions on gov't/companies that have gov't contracts.
