Massachusetts student cited for uniform violation for wearing a hijab

A Massachusetts charter school where an 8th grade student was written up for a uniform infraction for wearing a hijab says it understands its “handling of the situation came across as insensitive.”

A family member of the Mystic Valley Regional Charter School student posted on social media a picture of the “School Uniform Compliance Form” the student received from a teacher for the hijab on Thursday. In the description of the infraction, the headscarf worn by Muslim women was misspelled as “jihab.”

The school said in an emailed statement that it allows students to wear religious attire “as an expression of their sincerely held beliefs,” but asks students to provide a letter “expressing this desire from a member of their clergy.”

School Superintendent Alex Dan said there were no consequences given to the student and that the form sent home was meant to start the conversation with the family about obtaining a religious accommodation. But Dan acknowledged that the situation was mishandled.

“While we would like to reiterate that the well-respected staff member overseeing the process should bear no responsibility for what has transpired, we understand how our handling of the situation came across as insensitive and look forward to using this moment as a learning opportunity to improve our policies and procedures,” the school’s statement said.

The kid should be able to wear a Hijab without being discriminated against I knew a local doctor, Dr. Ghandi gave up wearing his Hijab and I think it was for religious reasons it's also a case of religious discrimination/ racism

Hard to say what they're thinking if they're open to admit they mishandled the situation. Then again, it doesn't say whether a "letter from a member of their clergy" was ever presented.

The school has had at least one other incident regarding hair braid extensions, but have made amends with the affected students. So what we're dealing with here is a school that's just learning... If it was "far-right ideology," "religions intolerance," or "racism," I would imagine they would be more reluctant to admit their faults. Right?

Christians have the option of dressing up like virgin Mary, a nun or a priest. Most christians in Europe wear all kinds of clothing that matches their own style. That is not disrespecting the religion.


Muslims on the other hand, its impossible for me to believe 99% of them choose the same line of clothing without peer pressure having its role in it! That religion seems like a chain of command that is not just religion but their education, justice and government system combined.


There are plenty of articles on the net muslims asking other muslims how to get their kids willingly wear the hijab. Also adult X muslims get disowned by family for leaving the religion.


Good muslims respect the choice of X muslims and those who do not agree with everything, including dress code. Bad muslims dont give that room of choice and respect it.


Same goes for all religions!
