What will you realistically do if a full scale Civil War erupts in your country today?

Which one? Back in the Philippines, we've been in civil-war for decades. Nothing changes, in terms of the question.  (As a kid, I would wake-up to the radio as an alarm. I distinctly remember being awoken to a report that a missing soldier's body was finally found after a raid on a Muslim terrorist-camp was completed. Signs of torture were evident, but the successful find for the body only made a new task harder: finding the head.) The factions would fight against the government & each other. ● Luckily, the civil-war related to Muslims is mostly over, with them getting more autonomy & Manila working on a switch to Federalism. Hence, only the Islamic State-affiliated terrorists are left. But with the help of not only Washington & its allies as we had before, but now also Moscow, Beijing, and their block, we will destroy them in due time. ● Unfortunately, the civil-war related to armed Maoists isn't over yet. The so-called New People's Army (N. P. A.) of the Communist Party of the Philippines (C. P. P.) running their so-called National Democratic Front (N. D. F.) "government" still exists. Luckily, the massive manpower freed-up from the major Muslim-insurrection resolution & the superior governance in the past administrations has lead to surrenders en masse, massive victories in the battlefield, and the N. P. A.'s significant personnel-shortage crises… according to Manila, that is (and I can only hope they are right). In this case, I'd do what I always did:  Stay in the National Capitol Region & in provinces without terrorist-infestation . So long as I do this, the civil-wars are largely irrelevant. In the case of the U. S., that would  (also)  wholly depend on the nature of the battlefield: locations, belligerents, and my opportunities.  I'd probably try to return to the Philippines before Washington implements a draft. (Yes, I may also have U. S. citizenship, but this is an ideological battle between local, born-and-raised Americans, and what Union  they  want. My perspectives, offered solutions, and commonality-searches are irrelevant, unappealing, and alien to them as I've learned in my decade+ of U. S. political-participation, so this is their battle. Let them find their solution. I should not interfere.) If I cannot leave, I will try to not participate. If I am compelled to participate, I will contribute to whatever faction (s) fight for minimization of government. If the battles are not based on philosophy/platform, I'll join whatever is most beneficial at the moment and/or fight whatever faction (s) seem most unjust given whatever information I have at the time… while trying to physically move to the nearest embassy/consulate.

It would depend on why it started.

I live in South Africa but I'm British. My son was born in the UK so he's British as well. Frankly if it starts here - and it's a genuine possibility of escalating - I'd find a way of getting back to Britain with my family.

In a full-scale civil war, keep in mind that a good portion of the official government soldiers will join the other side, potentially even taking their military equipment with them.

If it was say along ideological lines, conservative vs liberal, more military personal are conservative than liberal.

No one can say what would happen though until it actually happens, anyone who says they know exactly how many would, is a liar.

I personally would probably organize or participate in infrastructure raids.

The US is vast, tens of thousands of miles of roads, bridges, power lines, pipelines. Many are remote and easy targets, and places to hide. It could potentially be pretty easy to disrupt flow of commerce into cities, as the US is run on a 'just in time' delivery system. As covid and supply chain issues have pointed out.

Take out a few bridges, pipelines, power lines, and be a huge annoyance.

Clearly even simply cutting access to ports, would be devastating as the supply chain issues showed us all when it was merely backed up.

There won't be any lining up of people who stand there and shoot at each other this time. I fully expect it would be terroristic type tactics with no end in sight. Even when peace seems to be near, it would always be easy for another cell to do a surprise attack.

I also expect civilian targets will be a big thing, to hurt the other side. In true war, there is no rules. Anything and everything goes... as the rules of war don't apply to the rebels, only to the official government that signed the treaties. If the rebels are losing, schools, churches and other things would be targeted on the other side, to inflict maximum pain with no value beyond hurting people.

Of course states could peacefully leave the union and the federal government could allow them, and treaties could be signed that allow for free trade and open borders... but I suspect many would be against that, as both sides currently like to control the others.

Civil war in the US now would not be like anyone thinks, its simply a lot bigger than it was back in 1860 and there isn't nearly enough soldiers to protect all the important stuff.

Hit the supermarket and honestly purchase a gun. I’ve been wanting a purchase a gun so bad and it’s crazy because I was always against owning a gun. I’ll usually prepared for stuff like this ( shut downs, viruses, wars) so my current stock pile is really good.

Invite my friends over and stay at home... We have solar power, we have guns and ammunition, a couple of commercial level greenhouses, a security fence, and a half mile before the next building... We are pretty much safe from being bothered.

When I was younger I would pick up my rifle and go to fight, but honestly, I'm too old for that now unless the fight came to me.

Visit my father in law in the country, grow food in a victory garden and be prepared to fight to protect my family. To that end I might organize the other local farmers into a defensive militia for mutual protection from deserters and criminals. But with the order not to get involved in the actual civil war.

Build a high fence and a watch tower, keep a guard rotation.

Nobody is going to catch me flat footed.
