Why do homophobes get upset when they are called out on their homophobia?

Most people say the most vile and evil things about gay people and yet when they called out, they pull a nixon and they deny they are homophobic.

the age old question, it will take a few more generations to process why people feel like they feel towards gay people. A fairly good rule of thumb is to assume, people who are cool with it are cool with themselves, and, of course... vice-versa. Even when someone is being inflamatory and pretty nasty, just remember they either can't process the information as a result of a lower capacity for empathy or it stirs confusion about their own identity.

Technically they dislike gays, not necessarily fear them.
