What do you think of Bruce Lee?

Pound for pound a great fighter, but there really was / is a lot of hype. Joe Lewis, a friend and training partner of Bruce's, was once asked if he could beat Bruce. He kind of laughed at the absurdity of asking the World Heavyweight Full-Contact Karate Champion and US Heavyweight Kickboxing Champion, the guy whom Bruce himself called "the greatest karate fighter of all time" if he could beat a guy who weighed 2/3 as much as he did.
I only saw the demonstration video of that martial arts gathering. It's very impressive. He already was already ahead of the curve, with mixed martial arts.
Eh… not a fan. And not particularly his fault. It’s a long story.

For all those saying MMA is better, Jeet Kune Do was MMA. Lee took techniques and training methods from everywhere.
One of the most influential, muhammad ali conor mcgregor level influence if not more considering he came before them, in terms of actual fighting ability though he'd get beat up by most people in the martial arts world today unfortunately
100% horse shit!
let me know when you see Conor Mcgregor or any other lethargic meathead in the UFC do these any of things...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kXwOU5HzTZQ&t=34s
@Filthy_Immigrant I've seen the clip, doesn't matter, dudes smaller than him would take him down and choke him out or break his arm, dudes from all sizes could get amazing highlight clips showing how godly their speed is, dude was a master at stand-up, for back then, leg kicks and bjj have killed that shit and everyone adjusted, dude would have been a featherweight or lightweight, when the guys is these divisions in the ufc come up in my mind, yea they'd kill him, I'm 20 years old, in 3 years time I'd kill him too, no disrespect, but 100 years ago got nothing on now, if it did then we'd have never heard of the Gracies nor about checking leg kicks nor about takedown defense ffs, so no man would get killed
I do think you have to differentiate between 'sports' fighting and 'real' fighting though.
I remember once my instructor was pissed off at me while wrestling because someone had some kind of contrived clinch on from behind and I was proposing to elbow him in the head in a flailing kind of way. Well except, in a real fight, that's what I'd have done. That's what it would be natural to do, not the 5 step bullshit process he showed me. But that would be illegal. And if anyone had wants to do their various takedowns then my elbows would be going in their neck or into their back, or my palm would be going into their face. Except, you can't do any of that shit either.
It's not that traditional fighters necessarily can't fight, they just can't sports fight. You can't do well in whatever you're not trained to do, no matter how good you are in general. Specificity is really important.
And to be fair, most traditional fighters are actually just plain shit. So I'm with you there. But I don't think the generic MMA meathead analysis is fair either. It is true to some degree, but not wholly.
Overall, people just need to get over their egos, and shut the fuck up.
@Sandeeppingping yeah good luck with that buddy. the man weigh 135 pounds and litterally hit harder than a heavy weight boxer. and I would PAY to see you try your predictable BJJ moves on the guy without you getting your throat puncture right before you get the opportunity to lay on finger on him.
@Levin you pretty much just said it yourself. the reason why BJJ always wins in the UFC is because there are RULES in the UFC. UFC does not allow elbows to the back of the head, if this was allowed then people with Muay Thai background would be just as undefeatable as BJJ for the fact that elbows to the head is a main arsenal in Muay Thai.
UFC does not allow joint manipulation either which in that case that would give Aikido and other styles of kung fu the upper hand.
He was an amazing. Intelligent, wise, self educated, world class physical fitness. Probably less than 10 people in a millennia have achieved his level of mastery.
He's alright, but a good modern MMA fighter would take him down. We know so much more about fighting now!
Fuck yeah MMA!
USA!
No dude, the man would run circles around these modern predictable and lethargic meatheads that you call MMA fighters. seriously let me know when you see Conor Mcgregor or any of those clowns in the UFC accomplish things like this...

He was legit. Not the best at grappling but his striking was truly legit. He would’ve become a legit high class MMA fighter with less a year of training and adapting.
I think a lot of it was hype. Not many people knew martial arts back then so it was quasi mystical. The only info you get is from his rabid fanboys so its hard to judge.
" Not many people knew martial arts back then"
dude are you on crack? people been practicing martial arts centuries before Christ walked this land
@Filthy_Immigrant not in the west you filthy immigrant lol
not in the west?
then you mind explaining boxing, savate, and fencing just to name a few came from?
@Filthy_Immigrant in the 50-60s karate was exotic. My grandfather had one of the first judo dojos in his city. You’re trying to pick the wrong fight.
all the martial arts I've told you were originated in the west.
@Filthy_Immigrant Name me one current champion in the ufc with a karate background, 1, just 1, dude hasn't existed since lyoto machida and he got killed by a 23 year old jon jones who's never done karate once in his life, Bruce Lee NEVER had an official record, you could search all over for it, doesn't exist, so we're gonna go on hearsay? Really? That stand-up is dead their skill level back then can't do anything with now, again no disrespect to him if he was 20 years old today he'd kick everyone's ass in 8 years due to his dedication to the game, but THAT Bruce Lee, the actor and philosopher, can't beat those guys no way
@Sandeeppingping obviously he did not have a record, like @Googlemyahoo the west was not so familiar with martial arts until Bruce Lee himself popularized martial arts here in America and the rest of the world.
"That stand-up is dead their skill level back then can't do anything with now,"
dude are listening to yourself? that's like saying Lebron James is better than Michael Jordan just because Michael Jordan played basketball in the +30 years ago. again the UFC has rules and forbids lots of techniques that Bruce Lee knew about. so the only way Bruce Lee would lose a fight in the UFC is if he gets disqualified for using his assassing styled jeet kune do techniques.
also can it be a coincidence that the UFC was created by the same folks who created BJJ. does this come as a surprised to you?
The movies are mostly silly, but that guy was a serious sportsman. His fight against Chuck Norris in the coliseum was amazingly filmed.
One of the most incredible fight scenes in a movie to this day. And the whole scene was like a onion. so many different layers of brilliance. great scene.
Most people don’t know the first thing about him. Including most of his fans.
Except you @julie4. You’re aces. 😉
A real cool dude.
"Be water, my friend."
besides being the best fighter in history I see him as a hero that just left the world too damn quick
Good dude. Made Chuck Norris into well.. Fuckin Chuck Norris! Oh yeah, and opened the door for martial arts into the USA!
I love the man and wish I could have met him.
Bruce lee est un hero réèle, j'aime ses films beaucoup 😊
Never understood the draw. I mean he was a fight choreographer... why is that a big deal?
I think he's dead.
No - wait - not think - he IS dead..
You're not the only one I'm a big fan as a fan of his son Brandon Lee before he got killed
he's the fucking man 👏👏👏
Ughhh, I was on a group fight in college with some of my frat brothers, one of the boys we went against was this small Asian kid who looked like a young Bruce Lee and we thought what is he going to do and it turned out he knew martial arts and it wasn't good for me!
@Mcarlier84 lol that's reverse racism!
What do you mean?
@Mcarlier84 you saw an Asian person and assumed he couldn't fight, instead of assuming he already knew karate.
I know, I grabbed him from behind and he reached back and crushed and ripped one of my balls it was terrible.
He's a complete and utter legend.
I like him... I'm also like water xD
@AndrésC64 what do you mean?
He died over some drug
yeah your right what a loser he wasn't even in a disney+ marvel show.. 😔
@pepper1993 😊👍👍
This should probably be clarified. Bruce Lee wasn't and out of control drug user. Bruce Lee Didn't overdose. it was a crazy odd allergic reaction. He was having an affair and he was over at her house when it happened. The ambulance wasn't the first call like it should have been.
I always loved his movies.
