Apathy benefits the conservative party and so they have spent the last 4 decades pushing it as edgy and cool to not care. Unfortunately they have the backing of the extremely wealthy - which is why they have to push apathy instead of just coming up with productive policies (giving the rich more money will never be productive) - so their success was always inevitable.
