Why do toxic people blame YOU when you cut them off/stand up for yourself?

Why is it that some people do incredibly toxic things to other people, like bullying, but when the victim of their toxic behaviour chooses to either stand up for themselves or cut them off, THEY are the "bad person"?

A girl who was my friend bullied me pretty badly and she knew she was doing things on purpose to ruin my life. I could tell she felt guilty but wouldn't admit it. I was being a doormat and taking her treatment of me, but when I finally stood up for myself and cut her off, she told everyone that I am the "bad person/friend."

No, I am just reacting to your shitty behaviour. Why do some people turn it around on you just because you choose to stand up for yourself against their bullying?
