Why is there a de-facto separation of genders at school?

At the cafeteria tables, in group projects, at recess, etc. every friend group is all one gender. Is there a reason why there isn't more mixing? Surely there must be some girls who get along with boys and the other way around right?

It all started when when protestants broke away from Catholicism. One of the major reasons that folks broke away had to do with the Catholic concept of indulgences. The rich could have as many affairs as they wished as long as the cash flowed to the church to pay for the indulgence. If a person of lower means had an affair they would likely be tortured or even killed. Furthermore, venereal diseases were on the rise and the church taught that it was a curse on the horny. Odd thought, in the garden our creator told us that all he wanted us to do was a little naked gardening and make babies. Oh, Yeah, The tree thingy too. Anyway when we were expelled He told Eve she would be horny until menopause. And until recently there were always twice as many females as males. Does not sound monogamy inducing too me.

Anywho, what occurred was a puritan group of colonist. I know Quakers would not allow men and women to sit together in church. Early Baptist and Congregationalist weren't keen on it either. Since we were mostly a large group of Protestants, cultural models were created that followed the same idea. UNTIL Highschool. So after 9 years of social starvation and separation. The school system starts introducing juniors and seniors to books and poems and ideas to initiate contact. What? no Cooties? By the senior prom they are almost passing out KY as you leave the prom and kksuggesting motels. Bet they are getting kickback.
