Russia's Gazprom paid for half of the pipeline, something like $5 billion. Given that it's mostly owned by the Russian government, it's difficult to see the Russians doing the damage unless you think they would do it to frame the US. While the Europeans currently want to avoid buying energy from Russia, why assume that will always be the case? The Russians control the pipeline, so they have no need or incentive to damage it.

That leaves the Biden Administration or eco-terrorists as the likely culprits. The Biden Administration does a lot of dumb stuff, but this would permanently damage relations with NATO allies, so I don't think they did it.

Eco-terrorists therefore seem to be the most likely culprit, They have nothing to lose here, and they hate fossil fuels.

Germany already cancelled Nordstrom 2, when Putin invaded Ukraine (so Biden was right), and Russia hadn't pumped gas through Nordstrom 1 since 2 September 2022, "the company announced that natural gas supplies via the Nord Stream 1 pipeline would remain shut off indefinitely" Why would anyone but Russia blow them up, knowing they're never going to be used again?

Sounds like you’re trying to create your own conspiracy theory. Destruction of this infrastructure puts the EU’s energy security in a more precarious position moving forward. There would be no logic to the US sabotaging an ally like that. Russia has a history of weaponizing energy and it makes sense it was them. However, until evidence emerges to point that finger, I’ll reserve judgement.

It makes sense to everyone outside of the tinfoil hat squad. Europe’s energy needs are still tied to Russia in the foreseeable future. Sabotaging the infrastructure is a clear message to the EU to back off their military support of Ukraine. It’s a far more ominous action than just withholding gas as the stakes would clearly be much higher and a much more forceful show of Putin’s resolve. What logical reason would there be for the US to compromise their closest allies like that? The U. S. and EU are in lockstep on Ukraine. Who has the most motivation to create a wedge?

Now, if he wants to sell anything to Europe, he needs them.
