Why do people who lose elections love to push the narrative that we are a republic and not a democracy, why are they afraid of democracy?

They can't really find a good argument to dispute the fact that Trump tried very hard and came disturbingly close to turning the U. S. into an autocracy, other than repeating again and again "no he didn't" despite everything that's coming out about all the shady and illegal shit he was trying to pull.. This frustrates them no end. So when you say Trump tried to end the U. S. as a Democracy, they jump in with this silly argument to try to change the topic and debate what our system of government should be technically called as if that's really the point of the discussion..

They don't have a valid argument to criticize democracy with so they argue semantics to derail the discussion, because they at least know not to mention their problem with democracy is that people who disagree with them are owed equal representation and equal protection of the law.

Because we are, at least at a federal level. At a state level we are a mix of a republic and a democracy, but most of a state level functions are republic in nature.
