For those of you who are upset about this, please know that this money is coming from The State of California Franchise Tax Board - not the federal government. I assume it was COVID relief money that the State received but never used, so they had to spend it. You must be a senior, filed taxes in 2020, and lived in California. That is the criteria. Different incomes will get a check - from low to high. If you are homeless and filed income taxes in 2020 then you could (will?) receive a check.

I guess the question is: is California going to be giving these checks to their homeless population? Because they do have a lot of homeless people who actually are working but don't have a place to live. I watched a short documentary about that.

@ManOnFire here's the deal. If you did your taxes in 2020 and you are a senior you will get a check - even if you are homeless. People will be getting different amounts depending on their income, so no matter how much your income was on your 2020 taxes and you are a senior and have lived in the state of California for, I think 6 months? (not sure?) You will get a check.
Now, before everyone gets upset, this money is coming from the State of California Franchise Tax Board - not the federal government. I assume this was probably money that was for COVID, but it never was used, so, they needed to get rid of it.

Alaska has been doing something similar since 1982 called permanent dividend fund or PFD. I got $3200 this October, but I've been getting dividends around $1000 since I've been born. I've also got 100 shares in a native corporation that also give $10 dividends per share so another $1000 from dividends every year.

@RealMarek I think it's like use it or lose it type of thing. This money is excess money that they probably have to do something with it or it will be taken away. It us in the State of California Franchise Tax Board's budget.

I get it, but giving direct cash payments to people to help them with inflation is a sure way to accelerate inflation. It would be much better for the state to secure food and distribute it to the needy than to simply add fuel to the fire by handing out cash.

@joeldalton Not exactly. When you live in a State that charges taxes for everything, the federal government will fund the State for some of the programs California offers, to help the low income people. So, you are correct in a sense, but it's done inadvertently.
By the way, they are not going to borrow money to give to people. The money is already in the State Fund and probably has been since 2020.
