They are minerals that the earth constantly produces at a rate faster than we can pump it out. The oil pipeline that was built decades ago to deliver the oil from Prudhoe Bay in Alaska just keeps on flowing oil. When the engineers measured how large a cavity was created in the ground from the removal of all that oil they were amazed to see all the oil was replaced. We have been lied to for over 100 years about this. Do an Internet search on it and learn the truth. Because energy consumption and GDP are positively correlated. This is especially true for oil… If you want to kill and economy, you have to kill energy consumption. It’s that simple. Without it, the economy will crumble. So if your goal is to destroy the world’s largest economic powerhouse (USA) and bring it to it’s knees, you need to cut off energy consumption. If you make oil more expensive this assists in that goal. If you force people to use alternative energy/electric cars this also assists in that goal. They are purposely engineering an energy crisis to weaken America and strengthen China, because they are driven by greed and have sold out their own country for bags of fiat currency and stock options in Chinese companies. The US is not Saudi Arabia, Russia, or Norway, where state-owned enterprises operate oil production. If Wall Street doesn't wanna produce oil, there will be no oil produced. As taxation is already low on oil profit in most states, the most that your government can do is to ease environment regulations, but knowing that US is one of if not the only country where fracking is not banned, there's not much about that either. Oil production is not just drilling a hole and using it for the next 30 years, especially with fracking. It has investment curves. For example if you can only sell one million barrels they'd cost 200$/ barell (pb) if you can sell 4 millions it's 50$pb. These are kinda made up numbers, but people who have the real numbers are not sure that the war and high oil prices will last long enough to milk this cow.

Private firms decide based upon profit whether or not they want to build more drilling platforms, rigs, etc.

Our government buys oil from these companies for the strategic reserve used by the American citizens with American tax payer dollars.
