What's the difference between a Drag Queen, a Female Impersonator, a Crossdresser, Transvestite & a Transgender?

Hm good question. Well cross dressing seems to be the umbrella, dressing in typically opposite gender clothes for any reason really. And transvestite is just an old derogatory version of the same thing.

Then falling beneath that are the specifics like drag queen: men dressing as women for entertainment. & female impersonator: a man playing a woman's role for entertainment. These two seem like the difference between an individual's own act being dressing like a woman, and an individual getting cast as a woman in a larger act. Like those guys who played women in Shakespeare's time cause women didn't act yet yknow. They weren't drag queens, but did crossdress. And drag queens wouldn't be female impersonators because they aren't trying to portray a realistic woman character. But obviously they also crossdress.

Then transgender, which is just a person who's gender doesn't match their sex (a "woman born as male," in this case). Which usually yes leads to some sort of cross dressing (maybe for comfort, or disguise b4 they're "out"). But thats not the primary thing that being trans is, and a lot of trans people dont cross dress. So i wouldn't put this term under the same umbrella, I'd put it as it's own thing that overlaps, like a ven diagram.

Drag queen = A guy that dresses fem but does nothing to hide that he's a guy.
Female Impersonator = Pretty much the same but actually makes an effort to present as fem and they mostly only do it as an act.
Crossdresser = Someone that prefers or at like occasionally likes to wear clothes designated for the opposite gender, this includes women so, that takes care of your '"they're all born with a dick" theory.
Transvestite = Practically the same thing but they do it nearly all the time and mostly for sexual pleasure rather than just to wear something different or odd. Again, this could also include women.
Transgender = Someone that has, or is planing to get, a sex change. This also includes women but, at least they don't start out with a dick.

Drag queens dress up for funbin elaborate costums, wigs and makeup. Female impersonator is as it is written. Cross dressers just dress up in normal opposite gender clothes. Transvestite is the same as a cross dresser. Transgender can be either man or woman.
