When I think of crime, I think of the philosophies of Durkheim and Mead. Deviant activity- I believe- arises when society fails to integrate someone, and/ or when someone fails to integrate themselves into society. While the punishment should fit the crime (not a catchall like prison), unless you kill them it's important to bring them into society to a greater degree than before they committed the crime. People with good families, friends, and social circles that hold them accountable don't typically commit crimes.

I think it's a mix of things. Starting off with the fact our country kind of puts hundreds of thousands of people in a position where they almost have to be criminals. I think we are too harsh on small things and the result of that is people feel like they have to go back to being criminals because it's the easiest thing to do by far to make a living.
Longer sentences for violent crimes should keep psychos away from society. Re-socialization is a meme and jails should be a punishment, not an university or spa.
Tent prisons like in Arizona.
