Is Ursula from The little Mermaid a symbol for the modern third waive feminism (read additional details for explanation please)?

She’s a very powerful and independent woman. Yet she’s lonely and unhappy. She lives alone with her two moray eel pets who are her only friends , eats unhealthy snacks instead of full meals and thinks that girls who believe in true love and traditional marriage are “little pathetic souls”

Don’t get me wrong on this. I’m all for equality and I can’t stand when a man treats me as intellectually inferior or incapable of doing something but hasn’t modern day feminism done us more harm than good.

The Little Mermaid is a gem. Of course as with many Disney adaptations the original and Disney version are very different. The original sees Ariel take her own life after being, unknowingly, tortured by the prince followed by his rejection of her feelings for his false idea of who he thinks she was. It is loaded with all kinds of little analogies and things to think about and perhaps paints Ursula in a better light.

As for Ursula she remains similar in both. And indeed stands for things such as Feminism and Empowerment. But she is also greedy, ambitious, manipulative yet true to her own self. She is a villain to the mer and man alike without being explicitly evil.

I wouldn't say she is a symbol of feminism per say as her main trait but she of course fills the role well and I am sure she is meant to provoke conversation on expected gender roles. Ursula even employs them to lure Ariel. Which makes the book and movie differences important.

She is a being equal to any man, king or prince - if not more. She represents many of the best and worst traits associated with feminism. She is also, while villified, giving Ariel a chance at an eternal soul.

I guess while a simple character she is also an intelligently designed one.

You know... I think you might be onto something here. However, I don't think too many grown men on GAG have seen The Little Mermaid. I can't even remember if I've ever seen the full movie or not.

Yes, modern day feminism has done more harm than good to both sexes, and to western society as a whole. It has become a toxic, divisive and sexist movement that hides behind the notion of "equality".
