Nope. It just sucked because it didn't stick to the folklore of mermaids. Ariel should have been a sea monster that looks like a beautiful women tell you get close enough to get grabbed. Then you see her for the sea monster she is as she is dragging you underwater to kill and eat you. I'm still pissed that Disney didn't give us that Little Mermaid movie. I mean mermaids pop up in a lot of folklore from many different regions of the world. So you can say that version of the movie would be more inclusive.

Just have Ariel be a ill omen for things like floods, drownings or ship wrecks. Then have her snack on a few stupid drunk sailors.

That would make it a horror film... And I could be wrong but I don't think Disney specializes in horror films...

Yea, but it would be cool to see Disney do a high budget horror movie with all the resources they have. That and in general I just think it's funny how people are getting all worked up for everything Little Mermaid. So why not put out a movie that will get people even more worked up? That it could be the thing that causes all these people that get worked up over everything to finally have heart attacks.

It's easier for young kids - Disney's market - to accept stereotypes and just enjoy the movie as opposed to being confused when a stereotype is violated. For instance, pretend you are 4 years old and you are watching "Lady and the Tramp". You are told by your parents that Jock is a Scottish terrier. You know what a Scottish accent sounds like. Jock speaks up and he sounds like a Hasidic Jew from Brooklyn. That is going to confuse the hell out of you. Your 4-year-old mind is thinking "If he's a Scottish terrier, then why doesn't he sound Scottish?"
