I do not have a simplistic approach to these things...

for me, it is not as simple as to "believe" and it is not as simple as to think that there are only two extreme situations such as good vs bad

I do tend to have a more realistic approach but generally speaking I think that most people are mostly good, yes... but nobody is entirely a good person, that is just not possible for many reasons (mostly our perception of good and bad, for example, religiously speaking we are all sinners, which, is a bad thing) but there sure are a LOT of GREAT people

and then I do limit my perspective to my family, my friends, my neighbors, my community... the people I actually know and live with, and when I do think about them then I can assure you that the vast majority of them are GREAT people, not entirely good, not entirely bad... bust mostly good which is a GREAT thing (sure, there are some bad apples here and there as well)

one thing I am 100% sure though... if I went out and asked for help, to the people on my street, my neighborhood, if I go downtown, the outskirts of the city, any public area... I am sure many people would be willing to help me out, or at least, would not make it any worse for me so, from my part of the world, and generally speaking "most people are good" yes...(mostly good as people, though)

Us humans by our falllen human standards aren't actually good but to do good deeds to make our ego feel good, impress others and or to try to gain an advantage in sort appearing as a good person.

Sure. My daughter was maybe 4 and we were camping. Two men on a motorcycle pulled up and stole her bicycle on the middle of the night. She was so little to learn that people can be so cruel and ugly.

I posted an ad on a new platform called Craigslist saying, "Please help us find my daughter's bike," and the story. I thought I'd see it in the listings for sale or someone else would see her little purple bike.
Well, I don't recall how many responses I got, but they poured into my email. Many, many offers to buy my daughter a new bike and lots of condolences.
I was so stunned as a 20 something yo who thought the world was full of awful people. I learned that for every jerk, there are at least 10 or so good people.
The good people don't stand out of the crowd because THEY are the crowd. The ugly people are the most noticed.

Two people stole the bike. 20 or so wrote to me and a lot of those offered to replace her bike. Those are only the ones I heard from. The ratio (in round numbers) is 2:20.
