Because of the timing. A person isn't a person until they develop. Prior to development, it's not a person. It's a mindless lump of flesh, like a growth. Abortion is only legal while it's still a mindless lump. After it develops, you can no longer legally abort.

There's also the matter of choice. In the case of abortion, the mother has decided that she does not want the mindless flesh lump, as she either will not love or does not have the means to care for the baby. It is merciful not to force the birth of a person just to make either the child or the parent suffer.

In the case of the homicide, the mother did not choose to lose her baby. It is taken. (Assuming it meets the qualification for a baby at this point and is not still a mindless flesh lump.)

Technically, from the example given it cannot be the same because at the end in double homicide you have two dead bodies, and an abortion leads to one dead body.

Child + mother = 2

Child + = 1

2 =/= 1
