The Republican party needs to move past Trump. I mean as a leftist, it would probably benefit me for Trump to run. But I would rather have right-wing and left-wing solutions to the same issues. Not rule by one party vs rule by conspiracy theories, election denial, etc.

Cruz is despised. Anyone in Trump's executive branch or in his inner circle should be out right away as they basically have the plague now. I didn't mind Marco Rubio and don't know much about Nikki Haley. To me, Ron DeSantis is your best bet. The Democrats would probably have to run someone pretty popular to beat him.

Or if you were to convince Andrew Yang to run as a Republican. That would be interesting. I'd be tempted to vote for him if he ran for either major party. But his "forward" party isn't going much of anywhere without ranked voting first.

They would loose most statewide elections if it weren't for gerrymandering and voter suppression. Sad as that is, they have many honest and honorable members that would contribute positively to our Democracy.

Several mentioned above fit that category. Others are simply scum. My hope is that they purge their party of their geriatric cancer and let their younger, more visionary members have honest debates with their Democratic opponents. My hope is that those discussions would be focus on what's best for America, not one or the other party's long term control of leadership. Today, the only thing that matters is retaining control.

It's tricky. It was obvious when they first chose Trump as their nominee, that it would make the party unelectable for a good few years thereafter, but it was a price they were willing to pay - and to be fair, by allowing them to stack the courts with conservative judges, it has probably been worth it.

The thing is, the Republican party has been declining in popularity for decades. Back in 2016, Trump had the support of:
* traditional conservatives (Christian extremists, the rich, etc),
* the MAGA crowd (white trash),
* a good number of "moderates" (people who only knew him from "The Apprentice" and believed he was a shrewd businessman).

And despite that, he still just barely scraped by, against a very unpopular Democrat (Hillary Clinton).
In 2024, fewer moderates are going to support any Republican, thanks to their wildly unpopular stances on issues like abortion (abortion bans are a Republican policy, not a Trump policy). If they go with DeSantis, they keep more of the moderates, but they lose some of the MAGA crowd. If they go with Trump, they keep the MAGA crowd, but they lose absolutely all of the moderates. Either way, there is no Republican candidate who can gain the support of all three groups.

They need to pick someone other than Trump, accept that they're going to lose, and go back to the drawing board, to just try to figure out a plan to attract some other new group of voters in 2028, the way Trump attracted the white trash in 2016.
