Because you're coming to them because you need them and they don't need you. You'll have a few dozen realistic option if you're lucky, employers (especially in this day and age, depending on the profession) can get millions of people from around the world.
simple question of supply and demand. there's plenty of workers. so as an employer, you get the benefit of the more powerfull negotiating position. only at the very top of the career food chain and in highly specialized fields do the workers get the benefit of choosing from a bunch of employers and believe me, if you're for example an IT specialist, employers will kiss your ass, cause they know you can find a job everywhere.
Because beggars can't be choosers. It's assumed that the applicant has already done their own research and concluded that they are wanting to work at the place they are applying to.
Maybe a relevant photo for attention, the way the ad agencies do?

An employer doesn't need to provide shit. You want them, and qualify yourself for it, not the other way round.
You're confusing sports teams with businesses.
You can find that info on your own, they don't need to publish it. Fir example, go on LinkedIn on search for users at the company.
There are companies that will not give references because they are afraid if they give a good reference and the employee was bad they will sue them.
They have a history as a company. Yelp reviews. I figure it’s up to the employee to do a little homework.
