The first time I seen Asians where mask was at the airport about 5+ years ago. Well before covid was a thing. I asked and the reason was the pollution in their country was so made that masks made it easier with smug and dust. So are they smarter than us, could be. You see it as a covid mask they see it as just a regular mask as mask are not a new invention created 3 years ago, people use them for all sorts of reasons

No but they are well used to pandemics with bird flu, swine flu etc and wearing masks prevents the spread of pandemics rather than protecting you personally.
When you look at how Asian countries acted to stop the spread of covid compared to here in Britain its amazing. Here in Britain they waited weeks to begin a lock down whereas in Asia they did in a day.
