Think we will ever live on Mars?

Question

Think it’ll ever happen? I’d certainly prefer earth because I think I’d get tired of wearing the suit you’d have to wear but I guess if humans had to they’d have to.

I would bet heavily that the first attempt to colonize Mars will fail horribly, and there's a good chance that would be the end of it for the foreseeable future. At the very least, we'd have to figure out the moon first, because if we can't prop up a colony on a rock 3 days away, there's no way we can do it for a planet 8 months away.

There's also the major problem of economics - the International Space Station and related efforts are barely able to justify their costs, and permanent habitation on the moon or mars would be astronomically costly. As soon as it's realized how draining it is, abandonment would be pretty much inevitable.

I mean.. You are already wearing clothes. An environmental suit is not that big of a leap to assume you could not get used to it and see it as "normal". That said, the question is not "Will we ever live?" but "Why would we live?". If we find a good reason to do so then we will definitely endure the difficulties.

We could probably establish a small colony on Mars with todays technology but it would be quite expensive to maintain and we dont know any reason to justify it beyond simple curiosity. We will probably have a moon base first though, its closer to home and arguably more useful to us right now.

Under the man-made oxygenated dome they're already planning to build up there, I likely doubt you'd need to wear any space suit. Elon Musk has already announced it I believe, we are to send 1,000,000 Million individuals to live on Mars under that dome in the upcoming years! The dome is actually most likely going to be On the planet, not surrounding it XD

No, as the challenges are insurmountable with our current technology. The 8 month trip is just the first hurdle. Then there is surviving with solar radiation and cosmic rays. If someone needs an operation they would most likely die before they could even get back to Earth.

Whatever we may or not think, believe, wish for, technology is progressing at such a pace, and considering the emulation of different countries wishing to be the first, there's no doubt humans will live on the moon and Mars. For different purposes of course: scientific and prestige on top. The technical issue in the first place to live there is building some self sufficient homes, which actually already can be build for instance in the sea.

The main difference between the moon and Mars is for the former to have no atmosphere, while on mars there is one (difference in gravity), although without oxygen. Maybe science-fiction, but some time ago I heard that on the very long term there is a possibility to convert Mars' atmosphere into a breathable one with the help of microorganisms and plants.

Anyway, humans have over the past millennia always been looking for new territories to conquer, and thus no reason to not give Mars a go ;0)

No. We’ll destroy ourselves and this planet before we have the technology to terraform Mars to make it livable for the masses. A few people might actually get there and even get started on the process, but they’ll almost certainly die there when human civilization on Earth collapses and there’s no one to send them supplies to maintain facilities and themselves. Our ambition surpasses our potential by a great deal.

Possibly. Technological advances, especially the future possibilities from the recent fusion breakthrough, could make it viable to terraform the planet. Probably not in my lifetime, but maybe 100 years from now.

Not with the technology we have or will have in the foreseeable future. Mars is colder than the Antarctica and dryer than the Sahara Desert and there is no atmosphere to breath even if included oxygen.
