What historical figures do you consider to be heroes? What historical figures inspire you?

I found this video comparing Napoleon to Gandhi very provocative. It seems in the past nations had their historical figures who were venerated many years after their death. In America George Washington and the founding fathers. In England Alfred the Great and later kings. In Scotland William Wallace. In France Joan of Arc and Napoleon Bonaparte. It seems today these respective folk heroes are now deconsecrated and criticized for things they did in their time that would be considered problematic to modern views. Who are your historical heroes?

Flavius Stilicho, a historical Roman commander.

He loved Rome more than most Romans did despite being Germanic (a Vandal). Fought for the West relentlessly against both Germanic and other Roman factions. Stilicho's emperor Honorius had the commander killed because of rumors put into his ear by scheming advisors. Stilicho knew about the plot to kill him beforehand and could have asserted himself as emperor; however he reckoned that his rule would never be accepted by the anti-German populace of the empire and did not wish to see another civil war. Instead of fighting, the commander turned himself over to authorities and was later executed. His men were willing to fight and die to protect their commander to the end, but he refused their help.

I like this guy enough that I named my tractor after him. lol.

Napoleon Bonaparte, it will not be a surprise for the people who know me here and Louis XIV, St Louis, and Philippe Auguste, de Gaulle, Clemenceau.

In the United States I admire Lincoln who is for me the greatest president in the history of the USA.

Alexander the Great, Augustus that I find is largely underestimated in our time. Cyrus the Great , Song Taizu , Soliman the magnificent , Oda Nobunaga

I must absolutely add Churchill, Queen Victoria.

I must surely still forget some that do not come to mind but it is already a good list I think

A very crule ruller in his time but who whas completly and totaly devotated to the nation.

Today his is considerated to be one of the grates herous in our history.
