Is it appropriate to use the term “African American”?

Based on a website it’s suggested this is no longer appropriate. This is what the site (https://s. wsj. net/public/resources/documents/stanfordlanguage. pdf) says:

Black people who were born in the United States can interpret hyphenating their identity as "othering." As with many of the terms we're highlighting, some people do prefer to use/be addressed by this term, so it's best to ask a person which term they prefer to have used when addressing them. When used to refer to a person, the "b" should always be capitalized

Not really, as not all Blacks in America were from African slave ships.

A funny story was a Black, French born friend of mine visiting a cousin in the States. Everyone was giving him the "But You're Black? Why do you want to goto the USA?" talk. Right up to the Black taxi driver driving him to his cousin from the airport.

Everyone referred to him as "African American" and he was like "Bitch, I'm fourth generation born French, have never been to Africa and have only been in this country today!"

He tells the story better with accents and everything. But America is a country with divisive problems.

I just never refer to people in any of these terms...

it is either a man, or a woman, or a person... no need for me to make it about race, and people here do not really ask me about that stuff either, lol

I think not. I think Black American is convenient and not offensive. Or just American.

Nope. They'd have to be born in Africa and then become US citizens to have that classification

Depends on their race. There are white people born in Africa as well as Middle Eastern people born there. Black people would be referred to as black, white as white and so forth.
