Does anyone else find the national anthem insufferably annoying?

I think it’s very overdone. Playing it at sporting events is the one I really don’t understand. It has nothing to do with sports, unless it’s the Olympics, some sort of international tournament where it’s literally “Team USA” competing.
Many people got all offended by Colin Kaepernick, and that’s a little deeper than JUST the anthem, and we don’t need to debate that in this instance, but I kept coming back to “why is there a pregame anthem ceremony in the first place?”, before we even get to one’s decorum during said ceremony. I showed up to see a ballgame, not go to a forced patriotism pep rally. I would argue this with people, they never had a real good answer, they would just attack me for not being patriotic enough lmfao. Like they try to make it a character issue if you do or don’t love, like, or hate where you live. That’s kind of crazy to me.

What they could never adequately explain to me…I go to other large recreational gatherings, and there’s no anthem. Go to the movies, no anthem. Go to a play, no anthem. Go to a concert, often at the very same venue where sports games are held, no anthem. I never heard anyone try to “cancel” a band or musician because they didn’t have a pre-show anthem.

Play the anthem at government/military ceremonies, holidays of military remembrance, shit like that. It’s just wildly out of place at non-international sporting events.

It was written as a poem and was never meant to be set to music. This is what you get when you encourage mediocrity. No joke. The music to which we most often hear the tune has a British origin. A uniquely “American” poem about a moral victory by colonial rebels against the Empire is set to EMPIRE music? Ell oh ell! Geezus!

No, not really- remember that the rebels thought of themselves as loyal Englishmen, who were just having a dispute with the king about taxes. The Hessians being brought in pushed more people to their side, but even then, the idea was "fuck the king", not "fuck England". They didn't want to abandon their culture and history; just have some seats in Parliament.

For that matter, the Anacreontic Song had nothing to do with the Empire; it was the anthem of a poetry society- poetry of the wine, women and song type (well, mostly), and praising GREEK cultural traditions, not English.

You are mistaken. The people who chose the hardships of colonial life did so in defiance to begin with. From day one, they were ready to be free of oppression by the monarchy. You’re conflating the privilege of modern peaceful protestations with a time in which the colonists literally had to fight for their lives and livelihoods. The ruling class definitely felt indebted to the monarchy, but the average citizen felt the oppression and disdain deeply. There never would have been a rebellion otherwise. The United States of America would quite frankly never come to fruition if it were a mere misunderstanding between like-minded good people. Ell oh ell!

No, but I do think it's overplayed. Why the fuck do we play it at school rallies or football matches? I don't know of any other country that plays their national anthem at club matches.

You have to understand that to have a country you need a common culture. One of those things that reinforces the culture are symbols, songs, legends, and history.
