The British Empire. English became widespread in the first place is because of the British Empire. Before colonizing around a quarter of the planet. British people were the only ones speaking English and the language was confined to the British Isles. But once they started doing trade with places like Asia and Africa, colonizing and settling around the globe, the language naturally spread.

There are only four states in which the official language is English. I would say that is mainly because england is in Europe. You know the original English country. Its literally in the name of English and england. Most of them spoke English before america was even a thing.

Which states? UK and I reckon Ireland are two, not? When I went to Amsterdam, it seemed like everyone spoke English, so it seems that the Netherlands is as well, though I ain’t sure. I also heard that Switzerland has four languages, one being English.

@HippieVeganJewslim Oh nearly everyone I know even from other countries at least from the younger generations speaks English, I was just talking about countries which official language is English. doesn't mean they only have to use English but that its a possibility that you can. Cyprus, Gibraltar, Ireland and United Kingdoms.

I think it's more because English is considered the international language of business, and the standard language for aviation worldwide. Get away from the major population centers in European countries, and you'll find not everyone speaks English.

UK and Amerikkka are big monsters. Everyone wants to speak their tongue. It’d make little sense for everyone to speak Russian but more sense to speak English (or at least American).

I’d say English and American is the same language if people would stop saying that people in Great Britain speak British, and realise that Urdu and Hindi are one tongue, Hindustani, and Indonesian and Malaysian are also one tongue, Malay. Furthermore, many Yankees understand me not when I speak English; bloody Hell.
