Rely on God first... that ensures eternal security which resolves the fear issue that plauges mankind. There is no doubt where we are all heading... back into timelessness and eternity. who knows if we come back , won't go there.

Then rely on yourself, but you can build a network of cooperation and friends.

These are deep human issues in a natural "fallen" world. We all want security, connection in a sense... fear being the dominant energy because of our desire to stay alive. But it's the wrong energy to find peace. Jesus dealt with all of that and it works, to a degree, as much as we can draw from that heart and not our fallen one.

Depends.

If you are out in the bush alone, then it's your responsibility to protect yourself.

If you have been assigned security, then it's their responsibility.

Don't know where you get the "zero obligation" malarkey from. If you're there, then you might be next whether you help or not. Thus you would be a fucking idiot to not secure the situation. In fact you would be roasted alive by the media for being a coward.

You are your own first responder. At least for the moment, if you live in America, you have the right to defend yourself with force. Please get some training first though. A gun is not a talisman or magic shield, don't get it if you aren't going to use it.

Like anything you rely on yourself first. Always. I keep a few guns for home defence. The instructions I give my wife is to call the police, put the child in the bath tub and point her gun at the bedroom door. If they burst into the bedroom if she's alone or they get past me she should be able to keel them out.

Some people even have family that’s not dysfunctional beyond redemption, and they can rely upon each other. While they might “technically” owe you anything, that word is a scoundrel’s scapegoat. only you are responsible for your own safety not others. blame the attackers all you want whether they be a murderer, a rapist or a hungry bear, the choices you make or choose not to make ultimately led to that point in time where your security is at risk

You are responsible for everything in your life. Your decisions, your life situation, your safety. In short, yes. You should rely and take responsibility for your own safety. I would not want to put my safety in someone else's hands when my life is in immediate danger.

In the end I just rely on myself.

As I have mentioned, I have a contract with a security firm (private) to drive up to my gate two times per night and check around.

One night we forgot the gate open, and nobody called us. The clowns assigned to the nightly patrol simply didn't do neither of the two rounds. And I was paying them. So now I check things twice myself.

One time I heard someone trying to break open my door. I grabbed my shotgun and got right next to the door and racked it. The banging stopped and I heard whoever it was run. Before I did this though I called the cops

The cops showed up 15 mins later…. Had it not been for the gun, who knows if they would’ve showed up in time
