Should strangers be expected to provide assistance in emergencies?

It’s a common thing for atrocities to be committed in the United States these days. Considering the possibility of being arrested or hurt for assisting should people be required to provide assistance to people in distress?

As I understand it. Giving first aid or assistance is not a requirement. Therefore, is you see someone bleeding to death or drowning, you can choose to walk on by even if you could easily save the person.

However, I'm inclined to believe giving a reasonable amount of assistance or first aid should be a requirement provide it doesn't take a lot of time or place you in danger. And, most people will, unless they are in crowd of people.

A woman was beheaded in California… should aid have been provided? There’s been several in New York raped in the subway… should somebody have stepped in?

I remember a story about 2 years ago a man stopped to help a woman with a flat. Long story short false accusation lead to the man being in jail for months losing his friends, family, freedom, job, and money…

Just recently you hear about the bodega clerk that was arrested for murder when he defended himself and his property.

Few years ago there was a story about a young man that was helping a woman in a mugging. He pushed the mugger back and the mugger broke his arm and the young man was arrested.

These are great examples NOT to provide assistance to me.

Also I believe in the United States your required to provide reasonable assistance in an emergency.

You didn't read the part where I said, 'provided it doesn't,.. place you in danger." Therefore, other than helping a women with a flat doesn't apply. Even there, I don't know the details.

@KelleyNice I think you're supposed to provide First Air if you're certified to do so.
But if you're not properly trained, then you're supposed to step back and let someone else do it.

@kelleynice ok then stepping in to interrupt a rape isn’t necessary. And the details of the flat tire were… he speed to help. She accused. He was jailed. They found video evidence he did nothing wrong. He still lost everything I mentioned. Job fired him, he had to pay court fees, friends and family abandoned him thinking he was a rapist, the community harassed him, even cleared he had to move to get a new job, and the woman from what I remember faced only 1 year in jail.

@VanillaSalt Like the flat tire incident unfortunately occasionally thing happen. However, the odds are extremely remote, probably lower than the probability of a car accident and people don't avoid driving cars.

Nevertheless, that incident and other false rape and false harassment charges will make men less willing to assist women. And, the reason more men are applying the Mike Pence rule.

@kellelnice so we comes back to my question. There’s a real danger with people hating each other and the state of government and the battle of the sexes continuing to wage out of control… Should people put their own well-being at risk to help others? If so.

If they are hurt helping some then what do you, as someone that supports this type of decision, say to them to justify their pain?

Also just for some insight. Keanu Reeves has been doing the “ Mike Pence” rule for longer. Look at any picture of him and a female fan. His hands famously hover.

Why care about people that don’t care about you?

I watched a study where a man was yelling at a woman in public for a study. Many men and women stepped up to defend the woman but when they reversed the roles nobody stepped in to help the man.

I remember when them women were raped in public and nobody stepped up to help. I realized if nobody would help these women in such a situation what’s the odds they would help me?

Now I don’t give the slightest fuck about the suffering of anyone that dont matter to me. That’s because I know they won’t care about me.

So counterpoint… to get care you must give it.
