I'd say more white than black. Indian (desi people) and Persians are also Caucasians and Aryans, so "white" people really reach across a whole spectrum of colors.
That is such a varied range of people group that i do not think of it in those terms. They are simple Grecian or Mediterranean people.

American whiteness has nothing to do with skin color. From what I read from you, Italians in the USA are usually white when they have to pay for Anglo-American sins, and not for all other cases.
White Americans are Anglo-American, not if you have white skin. White Americans resemble English Calvinists. These are neither German, Italian, Russian, Pole, Swede, Finn, French, or Belgian traits. English traits only. "Free white people" originally denoted Protestant landowners. In the United States, the anti-Catholic and anti-Orthodox view is the most common way to think about who is white and who isn't. The War of Independence gave strength to the Anglo-Saxon Protestant (Calvinist) party, which believes only Protestant Anglo-Saxons are white. Americans assumed non-white Europeans were all non-protestants. Mid-19th century scientific racism. Anthropologists measured skulls and faces. Nordic people and Celtic people (excluding Irish Catholics) are white in America.
There has always been a strong anti-Catholic stigma in the US. But with southern Italians, 90% of Italian immigrants to the US, this was even greater. Large parts of Italian immigrants were from the south, from Sicily and Naples. An interesting book of this argument is “Whiteness of a Different Color” written by Matthew Frye Jacobson.
Anthropometrics was a science then. Dr. Lomborso, an Italian Jew, was the first criminologist. He believed crime was biological. Thus, criminality was an atavistic trait gained from parents. The subject's somatic traits showed it was inherited. Lombroso studied a large southern Italian prisoner sample. His test exhibited sample selection bias. It predicts that all southern Italians with particular facial traits are criminals. Southern Italians were considered naturally inferior, semi-barbarians, or barbarians by nature, or an ethnic group like Blacks.
The US administration felt Italian positive criminology was the most advanced science. Southern Italian immigrants to the US were stigmatized by this. In reality, US migrant data shows segregation between southern Italians and rare northern Italians. They remain unique in period sociological research. The American state used Italian criminologists' texts to find a litmus test for offenders in Italy. 1914 disproved Lombroso's pseudo-science, but the damage was done.
Southern Italians immigrated to earn money and return home. Unlike north Italian immigrants, who integrated in a generation, they did not want to assimilate. Southern Italians seldom learned English. To get jobs, they were caught in an ethnic social network. Italian "free white individuals" who worked in Louisiana sugar plantations or lived among African Americans were commonly labelled black.
Southern Italians' Civil War service contributed to their dislike. Northern and Southern Italians supported their American latitudes. Unionist volunteers were Lombard, Venetian, Piedmontese, or Genoese. Southerners, largely Bourbon veterans, joined the Confederate army's Italian Guard Battalion, which ultimately became its 6th Regiment. The northern press vilified southern Italians after the war. Southern Italians, especially hated by the New York Times. The Times called them "wretchedly impoverished and untrained," "starving and completely destitute" robbers and criminals. It called immigrants—including Italians—"links in a falling chain of development." The 1882 editorial "Our Future Citizens" The editors wrote: "There has never been since New York was formed so poor and stupid a class among the immigrants who poured in here as the Southern Italians who have been flooding our ports over the last year."
They often did the same jobs that black people did. Therefore, they were economically emarginate. This perpetuated shame. Southern Italians remained indigent for generations, finally leaving segregated neighbourhoods in the 1940s.
The very fact that someone has to ask this is proof of how race is an arbitrary bullshit concept.
They're closer to Middle Eastern and North African people, but definitely not black
