This is a good questions that fits well into the American concept or racial identity.
Through out American history the definition of who was / is white changes as time goes on. For much of the 18 to the mid 20th through the early 19 century most Americans were of English , Welsh, or Scottish and later Irish ancestry. People with these backgrounds were considered to be the true whites while other European ethnicities - especially southern Europeans - were considered inferior.
Think of Italian immigrants - they tend to have darker skin and were mainly Catholic. This was something alien to the white , protestant , mostly British descendant majority and they were considered to be non white for most of their history in the US. The same was said of other southern European groups that came to the states. As the Italian Americans melted into the US mainstream they were no longer considered non-white although this did not start until the mid 20th century. Look at all the Italian immigrants that were lynched in the late 19th and early 20th centuries especially in the south. As a kid I knew many older Italian Americans and they would tell me how their families faced discrimination back in the day because they were Italian.
Who is considered white changes with each generation. As of late I have seen more and more Hispanics in the US consider themselves white so I guess in another 30 years or so we ask the same questions about Hispanics in the US.
As a parting note there was a time when German immigrants to the US ( mid 19th century) were not considered white by the majority of Americans and the German language and culture was considered a threat to the British based American culture!! So think about that one!!!
Italy is a country that is mostly populated by White people. Over the years many different ethnic groups have occupied different portions of modern day Italy. Some of those groups like the Ostrogoths, Lombards, and Burgundians are Germanic groups. Others like that Normans are Norse Vikings which are Scandinavian or Northern Germanic. Some where Gauls and Veneti which are Celtic people. Some where Greeks, Phoenicians, Western Romans, Muslims, etc. Overall the large majority are what most people would consider to be White people.

Portuguese are the ones that are much darker. Not Italian, Italian are light usually.
The ones in the south and on the islands are darker

I've never seen a Maltese so I don't know.
@menina Maltese have been proven to have more Arab DNA than European. Even their language is from the same family as Maghrebi Arabic.
I would personally consider Mediterranean a sub-race and some anthropologists would agree. Germanic people are really the only ones who are considered "pure Whites"

Though as a Slavic, I am I confused as to why we aren't considered pure Whites. Balkan Slavs I can agree because they're mixed with Turks, but I don't know why northern Slavs aren't considered White.

@menina We have good reasons too. Minorities always love to play the victims instead of acknowledging that it's their own fault that people are racist against them. They want police and White people to change, but they don't want to change themselves. And Africans always blame White people for their problems, when it's their own BLACK governments that are keeping them down. Africans and Arabs harass tourists, reporters and regular civilians in European countries, especially women, then are surprised people hate them.
The worst part is, they talk about how evil the Colonialism was, yet they reap the benefits of it. They speak French and Portuguese, and prefer to live, work and study in Europe then in their countries. But they never talk about the good things the colonists did for them. If they hate them so much, why do they continue to speak their language and follow their cultural traditions, and immigrate there?

Slav were considered as sub human for the simple fact that Hitler hated Russian (and communism.) so he put all Slav in the same bottle. It truly have nothing to do with their looks (cause Slav are the Whitest in Europe they have pale skin; blue eyes and light hair not all but quite a high percentage there's a higher percentage of blonde people in Eastern Europe than in Scandinavian, their skin are also paler and they don't tan that much usually unlike Germanic who tan so much). next to them I look like a fucking ghost I litteraly glow under the sun (everyone comment on how pale my skin is and I don't tan and when I compare my skin tone to German and People from the Netherland I'm quite shocked cause they're so tan they look like they go to tanning bed).

Merci. I personally agree with you on the Slavs, I'm just saying what he said, and it confused me. But I know he took a lot of Polish people as POWs, but gave them the option to become "German". So it seems he still respected Polish/Slavic people to some degree.

But some smart anthropologists finally categorized Turks as Mediterranean race. I agree, because people in Turkey look completely different from Central Asians. A lot of Turks look White.

@KostasKouvalis The Turks don't look White at all, they look Arab though and central Asian are a mix of Turkish and Asian people reason why they look so different (they're a mix of caucasian and Asian).
For Finnish people I guess they thin all Finnish people look like the Sami.
But it's a well know things mainly cause their language come from Asia while most European language is of the family of Indo European language.

Funny I see this question because I never think of Italians as white people. In fact I don't even think of most southern or Eastern Europeans as white either. Many of them have white skin but ethnically I do not really consider them to be that. The only Euros who I concretely think of as white are all of the UK, Germany, Poland, Switzerland, Belgium, and all of Scandinavia. France is up in the air because they too like Italy have 'white' people that still don't really classify as that to me.
That’s exactly why I ask the question.. because we have our distinctions but people fail to see that and they paint us all with one brush

I don't know when I was in fire academy the other white guys never ate with the black dude and the Italian dude I don’t think other whites consider them fully white I asked them why I mean I get why they did the black guy like that but when I asked about the Italian guy they said “Do you know what was across the Mediterranean? I noticed that Americas, they envision Italians like the ones in movies. Mafia gangster movies, the people from Sicily. I live in Europe and the majority of Italian people personally I've seen looks White. Not the British/Irish or Northern European type of white but still white. They look very much like European especially the ones from Northern Italy, they look just like people from Central Europe.
Most Italians look tan with dark hair (black or brown) but you’re right it’s a diverse country especially in the north (Milano and Torino, etc)
